Subject: [hrdng] Networking Tips - 12 Strategies to Effectively ⒠Work a Room⒠

From Ashton Tweed:

Networking Tips:
12 Strategies to Effectively ⒠Work a Room⒠
Walking into a room full of people you don⒠t know can be an overwhelming
experience, even for the most socially adept individuals. Yet, you may find
yourself at a conference, professional networking event, or an organization⒠s
holiday party where you know very few, if any, of the attendees. Here are some
great strategies to help you effectively work a room and get the most out of all
your networking opportunities:

Take the initiative to introduce yourself to others.
Prepare and practice a brief introduction about yourself, your job, your
company, etc.

Physically move around the room and avoid getting trapped in one area or with
one group of people.

Approach and introduce yourself to individuals who are standing alone.
Always carry plenty of business cards to exchange.
Use nametags ⒠ both to help you remember and use other people⒠s names in
conversation, as well as help others remember your name.

Be inviting to other people by smiling and making eye contact.
When you⒠re in a group of two or more, partially face the room to appear
welcoming for other people to join your conversation.

When you meet new people, ask questions. You⒠ll find most people like to talk
about themselves and will respond positively to your interest.

If you need a conversation starter, talk about the food, the venue, the session
speakers, etc.

Turn off your cell phone so you⒠re not tempted to interrupt a conversation.
Enjoy yourself! A positive, friendly attitude can go a long way in successful
networking.
