Save The Date COMBINED DINNER MEETING Managing The First Impression On Tuesday evening, April 6th, there will be a combined dinner meeting for current members, alumni, and guests of IT-Networking, MIS Network Associates (MNA), Monmouth Networking, The Breakfast Club NJ (TBCNJ), The dinner meeting will include a presentation by Linda Trignano – Managing The First Impression. In a difficult job market, interviews are a very precious commodity. I hope we can all agree that critical impressions are formed in less than the first 30 seconds of the usual face-to-face interview. The way you look will be a substantial part of the interviewer's impression based on how you are dressed. Is your appearance at interviews a positive, a negative, or a neutral attribute to your efforts to secure a job? How about a professional opinion? Professional coach and career consultant Linda Trignano will provide guidance to Dressing for the Successful Interview -- attire, grooming, accessories, and more. If you're up for the challenge, come to the meeting dressed as you do for an interview. A few audience volunteers (both male and female) will be offered the opportunity to have their interview attire discussed and contructively critiqued by the Coach Linda as well as the audience based on the information shared during the evening. Linda Trignano's consulting firm, Trignano Consulting, find her at: www.lindatrignano. The schedule for the dinner meeting on April 6th will be: - - - - Following our usual meeting format, after you have registered and added your resume, etc. to the handout piles, everyone will participate in a series of informal networking groups i.e. "speed dating", before we sit down for dinner and the general introductions. Briefly, these informal groups last for approximately 10 minutes. At the end of the 10 minutes, the groups disperse, and new ones are formed with different participants. Suggested dialogues for the groupings will be provided at the registration desk. There will be an opportunity to circulate up to 50 copies of your resume, personal bio, leads, or other appropriate material in a handout from the dinner. The cost will be $30 for everyone if forwarded by mail or other to John Sampson by An RSVP list of attendees will be created and used to facilitate your networking activity. Current or last work affiliation, email address, and membership organization should be included in your RSVP. If you are in transition, please include the names of three target companies and the kind of position(s) you are seeking. If you are currently employed, you should provide the name of your last three employers. The preliminary RSVP will be distributed to the recipients of the initial mailing of this announcement and to all those on the list the week end before the dinner meeting for editing and informational purposes. A "final" numbered RSVP list will be available at the registration desk on the 6th and can be used as part of your general introduction …"I'm # x on the RSVP list". Your number will also appear on your name badge which will be available at the registration desk on the 6th. Since there will be walk-ins on the 6th, the final RSVP list will be emailed to the attendees as quickly as possible after April 9th. The cost of the dinner meeting will be $45 after Again, attendees should bring 50 copies of their bio/resume, leads or materials they wish to be included in the handout for the evening of April 6th. If you would like to help out at the meeting on the 6th, volunteer to be a "Meeting Marshall". Call John Sampson at 973-248-3251 for details. We can use your help!!! Directions to the Holiday Inn at One Rt. 46 Westbound in Totowa Park can be found at www.holiday- Please join us for an evening of improving your attempts to build your personal network, great networking opportunities, and/or a chance to just catch up. Everyone should remember to wear their interview suit. |

How Recruiters Read Resumes In 10 Seconds or Less
The 10 or 20 seconds it takes to read a resume seems to always generate a
lot of controversy. Candidates comment on how disrespectful it is, how one
can't possibly read a resume in that time and some get angry at recruiters
when we talk about this. I hope this article will help everyone understand
how we do this. I realize that some still may not like it and will still be
angry, but at least you can understand how it works.
First, let me say I've been a recruiter for 30 years. I'm sure I have
reviewed over 500,000 resumes. I can't prove this but I'm reasonably
confident that this is the case, as this is only an average of about 46 a
day. I know many days I have reviewed hundreds of resumes and most in less
than 20 seconds. I would say the average is probably around 5 to 7 seconds.
So for the record when you hear or read about, "reading a resume in 20
seconds," that isn't completely true. It is more than likely, "reviewed the
resume in 20 seconds."
Here is my process for getting through 100's of resumes in a short period of
time. Others may have different ways and I welcome your comments.
I set up a hierarchy of certain "must haves" or you're out, so at first I'm
really just box checking. Generally, 80% of the time these are my knock out
blows. There are exceptions to each of these, but I'm dealing with the 80/20
rule. These are not cumulative times. This is box checking, if I see any
one of these as I scan your resume you will be excluded.
1. Location. If the client is in Los Angeles, CA and you aren't - goodbye.
Few if any clients want to relocate anyone in this economy, and I believe
most shouldn't have to. Especially in a huge metropolitan area like Los
Angeles. If they do have to consider relocation the position has to require
some very unique experience that few jobs do. I can do this in about 1
second.
2. Industry. If my client is in banking and your background is primarily
manufacturing - goodbye. These two often are so different that the client
isn't open to considering such different industries. This works both ways,
if you have a manufacturing background I'm not going to consider someone
with banking. 2-3 seconds to determine this.
3. Function. If I'm doing a sales search and your background isn't sales -
goodbye. Generally companies are paying recruiters to find them a perfect
fit. We never do find a perfect fit, but we have to be very close. They
don't need a recruiter to find them someone in a completely different
function. 2 seconds to figure this one out.
4. Level. If I'm doing a VP level search and your title is "manager" and you
have never been a VP - goodbye. There are exceptions to this, but again it
is the 80/20 rule. Again, clients pay me to find them the perfect fit. It is
generally way too big of a jump from manager level to VP level, all other
things being equal. It works the other way too. If I'm looking for a
manager and you are a VP - goodbye. I know you are qualified to do a manager
level role, but it is clear you have grown past. Most clients and recruiters
aren't willing to take the chance that when a VP level position comes along
that you won't be gone. Less than 5 seconds to figure out.
5. Recent Experience. There is some overlap on this one. If I'm searching
for someone with international sales experience in the aerospace industry
and the last time you held an international sales position in this industry
was 20 years ago and since then you have been in retail - goodbye. I can
find people with more relevant experience and that is what my client expects
me to do. 5 seconds to do this.
6. Education Like it or not, I will only work with people that have a
college education and most of the time a master's degree. This is mainly
because, as I indicated before, I need to find the very best for my clients.
I realize an education doesn't mean by itself that the candidate is the
best, but it is one qualifier of many. Also all of my clients require at
least a BA.
7. Turnover. If you have had 6 jobs in the last 4 years, or have a track
record of high turnover - goodbye. I realize there are good reasons for
turnover and that falls into the 20% of the 80/20 rule. I can't define high
turnover, but I know it when I see it. 3 - 5 seconds.
8. Functional resume. I don't read them. It is obvious when one has a
functional resume they are trying to hide something and I'm rarely going to
take the time to attempt to figure it out. 1 second.
9. Obvious things such as, spelling errors, poor format, errors in grammar,
too long, verbose and rambling. If after reading it I still can't figure out
what you do, goodbye. 5 - 10 seconds
After all this, 80 - 100% have been eliminated. If there are any left, then
I will take the time to actually read them in detail.

GENERAL: Screening (Out) Your Resume - In 20 sec or less
Posted by: "john sampson" jcsspike@yahoo.com jcsspike
Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:36 am (PST)
How Recruiters Read Resumes In 10 Seconds or Less
The 10 or 20 seconds it takes to read a resume seems to always generate a lot of controversy. Candidates comment on how disrespectful it is, how one can't possibly read a resume in that time and some get angry at recruiters when we talk about this. I hope this article will help everyone understand how we do this. I realize that some still may not like it and will still be angry, but at least you can understand how it works.
First, let me say I've been a recruiter for 30 years. I'm sure I have reviewed over 500,000 resumes. I can't prove this but I'm reasonably confident that this is the case, as this is only an average of about 46 a day. I know many days I have reviewed hundreds of resumes and most in less than 20 seconds. I would say the average is probably around 5 to 7 seconds.
So for the record when you hear or read about, "reading a resume in 20 seconds," that isn't completely true. It is more than likely, "reviewed the resume in 20 seconds."
Here is my process for getting through 100's of resumes in a short period of time. Others may have different ways and I welcome your comments.
I set up a hierarchy of certain "must haves" or you're out, so at first I'm really just box checking. Generally, 80% of the time these are my knock out blows. There are exceptions to each of these, but I'm dealing with the 80/20 rule. These are not cumulative times. This is box checking, if I see any one of these as I scan your resume you will be excluded.
1. Location. If the client is in Los Angeles, CA and you aren't – goodbye. Few if any clients want to relocate anyone in this economy, and I believe most shouldn't have to. Especially in a huge metropolitan area like Los Angeles. If they do have to consider relocation the position has to require some very unique experience that few jobs do. I can do this in about 1 second.
2. Industry. If my client is in banking and your background is primarily manufacturing – goodbye. These two often are so different that the client isn't open to considering such different industries. This works both ways, if you have a manufacturing background I'm not going to consider someone with banking. 2-3 seconds to determine this.
3. Function. If I'm doing a sales search and your background isn't sales – goodbye. Generally companies are paying recruiters to find them a perfect fit. We never do find a perfect fit, but we have to be very close. They don't need a recruiter to find them someone in a completely different function. 2 seconds to figure this one out.
4. Level. If I'm doing a VP level search and your title is "manager" and you have never been a VP – goodbye. There are exceptions to this, but again it is the 80/20 rule. Again, clients pay me to find them the perfect fit. It is generally way too big of a jump from manager level to VP level, all other things being equal. It works the other way too. If I'm looking for a manager and you are a VP – goodbye. I know you are qualified to do a manager level role, but it is clear you have grown past. Most clients and recruiters aren't willing to take the chance that when a VP level position comes along that you won't be gone. Less than 5 seconds to figure out.
5. Recent Experience. There is some overlap on this one. If I'm searching for someone with international sales experience in the aerospace industry and the last time you held an international sales position in this industry was 20 years ago and since then you have been in retail – goodbye. I can find people with more relevant experience and that is what my client expects me to do. 5 seconds to do this.
6. Education Like it or not, I will only work with people that have a college education and most of the time a master's degree. This is mainly because, as I indicated before, I need to find the very best for my clients. I realize an education doesn't mean by itself that the candidate is the best, but it is one qualifier of many. Also all of my clients require at least a BA.
7. Turnover. If you have had 6 jobs in the last 4 years, or have a track record of high turnover – goodbye. I realize there are good reasons for turnover and that falls into the 20% of the 80/20 rule. I can't define high turnover, but I know it when I see it. 3 – 5 seconds.
8. Functional resume. I don't read them. It is obvious when one has a functional resume they are trying to hide something and I'm rarely going to take the time to attempt to figure it out. 1 second.
9. Obvious things such as, spelling errors, poor format, errors in grammar, too long, verbose and rambling. If after reading it I still can't figure out what you do, goodbye. 5 – 10 seconds
After all this, 80 – 100% have been eliminated. If there are any left, then I will take the time to actually read them in detail.

You Just Have to Do It
By ALEXANDRA LEVIT
People in the midst of a career reinvention don't have the luxury of a
manager who sets priorities for them. The most difficult part of making a
career change is starting it, especially with only your desire to propel
you.
As an independent filmmaker, Adrian Belic, 40 years old, is accustomed to
making things happen. The first film he made with his brother, "Genghis
Blues," won a Sundance award and received an Academy Award nomination. But
despite this success, he found it difficult to get a second project off the
ground.
Without funding or a major movie studio behind him, Mr. Belic returned to
his "scrappy, independent roots." After speaking with three former soldiers
who were delivering humanitarian aid to war zones around the world, Mr.
Belic put plans in place to make a movie about them, called "Beyond the
Call."
"I knew this was a great story and that I could tell it in a powerful and
entertaining way," he says. Inspired, he started the project without
backing.
Practice Getting Going
David Allen, the author of "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free
Productivity," says an attitude like Mr. Belic's is the right one. But many
people, prospective career changers included, are paralyzed by inertia
because of negative circumstances like the bad economy or a chaotic
workplace.
"You have to be able to take action in your life without being bumped around
like a victim," he says. "It helps to recognize that being a self-starter is
a set of behaviors that you can adopt."
What sort of behaviors? The main one is to get your ideas out of your head
and onto paper. By freeing your mind of everything that needs to be done for
your project, you can make sure you capture the necessary tasks, acknowledge
them, and start taking action to accomplish them.
Follow Project Stages
Mr. Allen's project model involves five key stages: defining the purpose of
the project, determining what success will look like, brainstorming,
organizing, and allocating resources/taking action. Creating a rough outline
that breaks the project down into smaller component parts, and marshaling a
team of friends or advisers to pow wow about the best way to accomplish it,
also can help.
It's easier to finish what you start if you delegate required tasks so that
each member of your team is personally accountable for something. In my own
experience, having frequent status meetings to flag problems and incorporate
new developments also is important.
If you're working on your own, you can place a checklist and timeline in
your personal calendar. Just be wary of implementing too many fancy
organizational systems in exchange for doing real work on your project.
If you're having trouble thinking of a project to get you moving in the
right direction, Mr. Allen encourages you to start with the basics.
"Your first project could be something as simple as making a
career-opportunities folder, in which you put interesting articles you cut
out of magazines or read online," he says. "It could be setting up a time
each week to reflect on the bigger picture of your life. It's not a bad
thing to hold off on the biggest decisions until your thinking has matured."
