Our client, a national nonprofit organization using custom-built Software as Service (SaaS) platforms to increase legal assistance for the poor, seeks a talented technical leader to serve as the Director of Technology for their organization located in NYC.
The Position
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Technology will set and manage the overall technology direction and architecture for the organization and serve as a key member of the senior management team. You will be responsible for the successful design, development and operation of all the organization's technology services.
You will manage all aspects of the technology team, which includes a mix of internal staff and external resources (onshore/offshore contractors or vendors). You will also work closely with the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer to set and manage the technology budget.
The position is ideal for someone who wants to combine technology and business experience with an important social cause – increasing access to justice for the most vulnerable people in society through the innovative use of technology. You must be able to communicate well with both internal and external constituents. You will work with product, management, and development teams to define product release requirements.
You also will play an important role in communicating the benefits of our services to current and potential customers, and serve as an evangelist for our technology vision. Because we are a small organization, your role will be both strategic and tactical.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and manage all technology operations and software development.
• Evaluate and continuously refine our software development lifecycle process.
• Establish standardized processes to support and maintain software systems.
• Oversee development and maintenance of documentation of software systems and operational processes.
• Manage day-to-day infrastructure, development and support tasks.
• Develop and deliver presentations that communicate our company's technical leadership and capabilities to current and potential customers.
• Assist in overseeing vendor deliverables, negotiating contracts and payment terms.
• Manage the staffing (through direct hires, contracting or vendors) necessary to support existing products and develop new products.
• Work closely with non-technical staff to understand customer needs and provide ongoing support to customers.
• Oversee development of project plans to manage execution of new software development as well as enhancements to existing products.
• Oversee development and implementation of Quality Assurance plans to ensure products continue to meet high standards of performance.
• Develop and review technical specifications and architecture documents as required.
• Create and maintain tech project budgets and handle related invoicing.
• Develop strategies to optimize the organization's technology spend.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship and leadership to technical staff.
Candidate Qualifications
• 8+ years of software development and/or technical operations experience
• 5+ years in a team lead / project management position delivering software solutions.
• Experience managing technology/IT budgets and familiar with standard budgeting practices of capital and expense allocation.
• Demonstrable track record at managing onshore and offshore teams of ten (10) or more people depending on project needs.
• Experience in management of web-based software development through entire life cycle, including budgeting, prototyping, quality assurance, and build management.
• Experience with dynamic web development and practices including n-tiered applications, MVC, and relational data modeling.
• Should have hands on experience working with .Net technologies and be familiar with one or more of the following technologies: ColdFusion, Plone, Drupal, Java, JavaScript
• Interest in emerging web technologies.
• Strong communications and organizational skills.
• B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent required.
Compensation, Benefits and Travel
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience. Full medical benefits - Liberal vacation policy. Some travel required. Based in New York City.

Lawyers from every AmLaw 100 firm are members of their client base, and more than a dozen subscribe to their SaaS system built on MS SharePoint.
