Demanding Job Search Help Doesn't Mean You'll Get It

December 6, 2011

Dawn Rasmussen <http://www.careerealism.com/author/dawn-rasmussen/>

Recently, I was contacted by a job seeker through Twitter who sent me very
urgent missives asking me to please help them, and they instructed me to
check my e-mail for a message they had sent me. When I got the note, the
person's message provided a number of reasons why they couldn't pay for a
<http://www.careerealism.com/demanding-job-search-help/?utm_source=feedburne
r&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+careerealism+%28CAREEREALISM%29>
resume service, but they wanted to see if I could basically provide my
services for free. Unfortunately, I can't because this is how I earn my
living to pay my bills.

To be fair, I do get a lot of these types of notes on a daily basis, and my
heart goes out to all the people that are unemployed and experiencing
financial hardship. To that end, I volunteer and donate my time to the
Oregon Employment Department teaching classes on how to write resumes to try
and help as many people as possible who don't have the resources to pay for
these services. As it happens, this person lives back East and they
obviously can't take advantage of this class. so I wrote back and offered
some specific resources that were free and would be very helpful to help
them get on their feet.

And you know what?

See what the "what" is here:

10 Ways to Harness Your Intuition

By Dennis McCafferty <http://www.cioinsight.com/cp/bio/Dennis-McCafferty/>
on 2011-11-30

We're often told that rational decisions <http://www.cioinsight.com/> trump
"gut calls." But that's not always the case. Intuition and instinct are
intangible - even mysterious - qualities. Yet, they're essential for those
who'd rather lead with a bold sense of innovative vision than play it safe
with the consensus model. In the book The Intuitive Compass: Why the Best
Business Decisions Balance Reason and Instinct (Jossey-Bass/Available now),
author Francis P. Cholle doesn't endorse a gameplan in which all logical
thinking and conventional wisdom is checked at the conference-room door. Gut
decisions, he stresses, are more than guesses. He does, however, reveal how
CIOs and other top managers can develop an educated sense of internal
intuition -- within themselves and their employees -- to produce decisions
that lead to innovation. With 20 years experience of working with Fortune
500 companies, Cholle is an international business consultant who lectures
at the Wharton and Columbia business schools. For more about the book, go to
www.theintuitivecompass.com. Here are 10 highlights:

The 7 Mistakes You're Probably Making on LinkedIn

Before I get to the 7 mistakes (and how to fix them) let me explain why
having a good LinkedIn profile is important and why more than 1 million
people are joining the service every 2 weeks.

Not only is LinkedIn a great way to network, it's also increasingly used by
recruiters to post vacancies and, more importantly, to search for passive
candidates. ("Passive candidates" is recruiter-speak for a person not
actively looking for a job).

Indeed, LinkedIn now markets a service for recruiters that allows them to
search profiles, store results and contact candidates, all from within an
interface that they pay to access. But even recruiters who don't pay for
access, use the system to research candidates.

And the best thing about LinkedIn? It's free!

If you do have a profile, you might think you're set, but most of of you are
not. Most of you are making simple mistakes on your profile that are
negatively impacting your search. So if you have a profile already, use
these tips to make it better. if you don't, use them as a guide to create
your first profile.

See if you made mistakes here:

Social Media: So, What Is It for People in Transition?

There's no newspaper or magazine nowadays that does not devote some space to
the fast-developing new phenomenon called social media. My explanation for
this is very simple: Let's say you invite some people for a social gathering
to take place in your house. Among the dozen or so you host will be some who
are very knowledgeable about certain subjects, and some others, less so.
That doesn't mean that those who aren't very knowledgeable will not
contribute to the conversation. They will, but their content will be less
factual or less valuable to the listeners.

Focus First, Network Second

The number one reason clients work with me is because they lack focus. A
typical client may have been tossing around a few ideas in their head for a
while, but are just not sure. Sometimes, they've been on the Internet
seeing what's out there with little or no luck. Without a sharply defined
focus, this process quickly becomes scattered leaving them feeling confused,
discouraged and at-risk of giving up any hope for change. It's no fun to
feel like you don't know what you are doing. When you are out of focus,
it's just unsettling. Read More...

Cracking The New Job Market: What Job Seekers Are Doing Wrong

By David Schepp <http://jobs.aol.com/articles/bloggers/david-schepp/> ,
Posted Dec 8th 2011 @ 3:25PM

The sad truth for many frustrated job seekers today is that they're going
about searching for employment the wrong way. Just as the notion of lifetime
employment with one company belongs to bygone era, so do many of the tactics
that job seekers use to search for a good position.

So what are employers looking for? First and foremost, they're less
concerned with where you've been than where you can take their organization.
It's a concept that author R. William Holland calls "creating future value."

See how to create "future value" here:

Everything You Need to Know About Submitting a Resume

By Alison Green <http://money.usnews.com/topics/author/green_alison>

December 7, 2011

Job seekers are constantly asking questions about the mechanics of
submitting a resume to an employer: What file format should a resume be in?
Should the cover letter be attached to the email, or sent in the body of the
email itself? Does it matter what the file is named?

These are all minor issues, but ones that job seekers nonetheless can find
themselves agonizing over. So let's get these questions answered once and
for all and eliminate any anxiety over this portion of a job search.

Before we do, here's a hopefully obvious caveat: If an employer's
instructions contradict any of the below, you should follow those
instructions instead. Curious job seekers, here are some answers to your
questions:

How to Brand Yourself for the Job Hunt

By Lindsay Olson <http://money.usnews.com/topics/author/lindsay_olson>

December 6, 2011

Branding yourself during a job hunt is similar to branding a product. You
are, in a sense, selling yourself as the product. Except it's your next
employer you want to market to rather than consumers. To do that, you need
to be known as an expert in your field. You want people to know who you are,
and you want to network with people of influence, as well as hiring
managers.

It takes a little extra effort to brand yourself. This is more difficult
than simply churning out job applications and sending your resume
everywhere, but the extra effort is well rewarded in the end.

Get Your Résumé in Front of a Living, Breathing Person

By Emily Bennington <http://www.usnews.com/topics/author/emily_bennington>

December 6, 2011

I get the most satisfaction from my work when students have "light bulb"
moments and begin to expect a better future for themselves. It's as close to
flying as you can possibly get with two feet on the ground.

But getting to that point often takes weeks or months, and sometimes
immediate needs get in the way. In other words, sometimes you just need a
job right now. Since I can't argue with that, let's talk about how you can
make a recruiter stop and notice you—even amid a toppling pile of other
applicants.
