Raffle Donated by Razzino Associates

On Tuesday evening, May 13th, MIS Network Associates (MNA), Association of Women in Computing (AWC), IT-Networking, the ETP Network, TENG, The Breakfast Club of NJ (TBCNJ), Monmouth Networking, and Careers In Transition (CIT) will host a combined dinner meeting for members, alumni, friends, and guests at The Holiday Inn in Totowa, NJ. Mike Palestina will discuss verbal and non-verbal communication in your day-to-day personal and professional lives and in your campaign to get connected.

Mike Palestina is an Executive Coach and Managing Partner at People Intell Institute.

People Intell Institute is the first Paul Ekman International licensed delivery center in the US offering training on emotional awareness and truth and deception detection.  At the heart of their programs is this core message:

WHEN WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE FEELING AND THINKING.

The schedule for the dinner meeting on May 13th will be:

-        6:00 to 6:45 pm – Registration, "speed dating", and cash bar
-        6:45 to 7:15 pm - Introductions
-        7:15 pm - Dinner
-        8:00 pm - Presentation by Mike Palestina
-      9:00 pm - Approx – Raffle – You must be present to win

The informal networking groups are so helpful in networking that we will do the "speed dating" again on May 13th before we sit down for dinner and the general introductions.  Briefly, these informal "dates" consist of up to 4 people and last for 5 to 10 minutes.  At the end of the 10 minutes, the groups break up and new ones are formed with different participants. Suggested dialogues for your "speed dating" encounters will be provided at the registration desk in case you are at a loss for what to say during these conversations.

There will be an opportunity to circulate up to 40 copies of your resume, personal bio, leads, or other appropriate material in a handout for each participant from the dinner.

The cost will be $45 for everyone if forwarded by mail or other to John Sampson by COB Monday, May 12th at 2 Blackfoot Cir, Wayne NJ 07470.  Checks should be made out to John Sampson who can be reached by phone at 973-248-3251 or via email at jcsspike@yahoo.com.  Reservations can also be made by contacting Lizanne Fiorentino at lizanne@ignitetheflame.com  but checks must be sent directly to John.

An initial list of attendees will be emailed to all the RSVPs, members of MNA and AWC, the ETP Network, TENG, The Breakfast Club of NJ, Monmouth Ntwkg, IT-Net, CIT and other interested parties the weekend of May 10/11 for initial review and correction.  The RSVP list will facilitate networking at the May 13th event and can be used to communicate with attendees in advance or after the dinner meeting. For those attendees who are working, current work affiliation, email address, three previous companies you've worked for/consulted at, professional job interest or position availability must be included in your RSVP.

For those attendees who are in transition, three target companies should be included in your RSVP as well as the type of position you seek.

A "final" numbered RSVP list of attendees will be available along with the pre-published questions and an ID badge at the registration desk on the 13th.  Your number on the final RSVP list should be part of your introduction:  "I'm number x on the RSVP list …". All attendees should have their sharp, crisp, 15 second elevator speech at the ready.  Too many "ahs, dees and doeses" will be cut off unceremoniously. Remember, you and your introduction will be between the rest of the attendees and dinner!

A final RSVP list of the actual attendees will be emailed to everyone who participated by
May 20th.

We will accept a LIMITED number of walk-ins on the 13th.  Anyone who attends on the 13th and whose check has not been received by COB on the 12th will be charged $60 WITHOUT EXCEPTION. There will be NO refunds and no shows WILL be billed.

Again, bring 40 copies of your bio/resume, leads, or materials you wish to be included in the handout the evening of May 13th.

To: AITP Members and Friends of the Garden State Chapter

Our next AITP meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at The Gran Centurions banquet facility inClark, NJ.  Please note that this is a change of venue from that previously planned for May. The Gran Centurions is not far from Aliperti's, which is where we held last month's meeting. Please see below for directions to The Gran Centurions.

Once again the Chapter is providing an excellent presentation on a 'hot' topic -BI and Big Data. The presenter is Vlad Usatin from Attivio. I really hope you can make the meeting, and please consider bringing a colleague or friend.

Again, I kindly ask that you let me know if you will be attending.

Thanks,
Doug Hobby
President, AITP - Garden State Chapter

Big Content: The Unsung Hero of BI and Big Data - Vlad Usatin

============================================
Big Data has been the talk of the analytics world for quite a while and shows no signs of slowing down. The promise of analyzing all relevant information, regardless of source, is an incredibly appealing idea. But despite all the buzz and interest, very few data implementations have moved beyond the core Hadoop use cases of Web analytics, ad click analysis and failure prediction. This limited perspective has a lot to do with the fact that all big data has typically been lumped under the label of unstructured data, thus limiting its potential.

Putting all types of information, including that which is not traditionally structured data, under a single label makes it difficult for companies to take a more nuanced view of their data landscape. Mr. Usatin will explain how Attivio, with its Active Intelligence Engine, combines big data with big content, including Hadoop and most other human generated information, to analyze everything. This approach provides the customer with the biggest bang for the buck. Big content, thus, is an unsung hero, if you will.

THE SPEAKER
=========
Vlad Usatin has over 19 years experience in the software industry, where he has held roles in development, management and architecture. His experiences with Bank America and Barclays has given him exposure to prime brokerage, commodities trading, wealth management, compliance and many other business and technical areas of the financial industry. Prior to his banking experience Vlad wrote software for companies in the fashion, insurance and supply-chain management industries. He joined Attivio several years ago. Vlad speaks 5 languages.

PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS
================
A comment especially directed to those considering attending a Chapter meeting for the first time: the cost of the meeting includes a buffet dinner and soft drinks. We provide a networking opportunity for over an hour before the speaker commences his presentation. Attendees are expected to have their meal during this period.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF AITP TO ATTEND THIS EVENT!

This will be our first meeting at The Gran Centurions. Since the facility is associated with Alperti's, we expect the food there to be comparable to that experienced at Alperti's. If coming from the GSP, I suggest that you give yourself an extra 3 or 4 minutes getting to the Centurion vs. getting to Alperti's.

Attivio, Inc. is a progressive software company specializing in enterprise search solutions and unified information access. Their primary product is the Active Intelligence Engine (AIE). The company's leadership consists of senior engineers and business people.

Next month the Chapter is doing something that I believe you will find exciting. We have formed a Career Panel consisting of a company CIO, a career coach, an HR executive and a senior recruiter. We even surprised ourselves by gaining some really high-powered people to serve on the panel. They will discuss IT career opportunities in NJ and related topics, and will be accepting questions from the attendees. The meeting will be held again at The Gran Centurions. You will be receiving additional meeting information well before the June 10th date. Please add this event to your calendar. You won't want to miss it.

FUTURE MEETINGS
============
Next month will be our last meeting of the Chapter year. After breaking for the July and August summer months, the Chapter will resume its monthly meetings in September, most likely the second Tuesday of each month as we do now.

TCN's May 19th meeting will proudly present a return engagement from career and interviewing coach Alex Freund. Alex's presentation is titled:

"HOW TO UNDERSTAND AND ADAPT TO THE CURRENT JOB MARKET"

This presentation explains the reason for the uncertainly in today's job market, the ways employers are reacting, and the impact on job seekers. It explains the role of recruiters now and in the future. It gives suggestions about how best to work with recruiters. And it describes two new tools: one that identifies the keywords employers use for a specific position and how to match those words with your resume and one with visual slides to identify the things employers want versus the things a job seeker's resume offers.
