Ready, SSET, GO.

To the Hillsdale Career Resource Ministry Network Group

Christmas and Holiday Gathering!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014

7:30-9:30 p.m.

Sheen Center at St. John the Baptist Parish

69 Valley Street, Hillsdale, NJ

This month's topic will be SUPPORTING each other on the "home front" while
in transition. Bring your significant other, spouse, or a friend and join us
in celebrating being together. As we head into an exciting New Year, we can
all use a little support from those we love and care about!

Janelle presented a hugely successful and informative program for many of
the network groups in Westchester and NNJ called "Support for Spouses during
Employment Transition" after September 11th, 2001. Today, this topic has
taken on many different landscapes. With John and Gary's wisdom and help,
Janelle will give some pointers on how to get everyone involved in a most
positive way.

SSET: Support for Spouses during Employment Transition

SSET is specifically designed to help families during times of employment
transition. We help couples deal with the daily stresses that unemployment
or underemployment can add to any relationship. We help couples understand
the emotions that both are experiencing. We help the spouse to understand
the search process, and together we develop strategies that will create a
cooperative and motivating environment that can improve the efficiency and
success of the job search. Whether you are unemployed, living with someone
who is unemployed, or you wish to attend as a couple, we welcome you!

toys.jpgToy Drive! If you would like to bring a small wrapped toy (labeled
for boy or girl) it would be greatly appreciated for St. John's Ministry to
give out to THOSE WHO HAVE LESS THAN WE DO. Anyone that would like to bake a
little something for the evening is welcome! Come on LADIES, it's our turn
to show 'em how it's done!

The group leaders are John F. Carvelli, Janelle Razzino and Gary Gabaccia.
John and Janelle are both parishioners at St. John's. Janelle is an
Executive Recruiter located in Westwood, New Jersey and Gary is a former
Recruiting Leader for IBM and a parishioner at Our Lady Mother of the
Church. This is a job search network group that is suitable for everyone in
transition. The group will discuss networking, landing the job on the first
interview, new ideas for resume campaigns, identifying target companies,
changing careers and a whole host of other topics. The group will meet on
the second Wednesday of every month in the Sheen Room of the Parish Center.

The Career Resource Ministry will present guest speakers on such topics as
boosting your confidence and energy, creating a positive daily attitude,
meeting others in a network group for the exchange of valuable insights,
helping others to help each other and successfully overcoming the speed
bumps that afflict everyone's job campaign.

Please feel free to forward this note to ANYONE that you think would benefit
from joining us. Or, better yet, just bring them with you! Everyone is
welcome, and each month we try to cover a range of topics suitable to anyone
in transition, including networking, resume preparation, interviewing and
variety of others. Our speakers come with a passion for their topics and a
genuine desire to help, so let's all help each other in the pursuit of that
life-changing opportunity. And remember, it's all about what YOU find
valuable, so please let us know the subject matter of most interest to YOU.

Networking will begin at 6:45 if you would like to get a jump start on
connecting with members that will be attending during our "speed dating."
We will also have a raffle, good food, and some other exciting surprises for
the event. Please bring copies of your resume(s) and business cards to
exchange with others.

Bring your great and positive attitude. Refreshments will be served.

ALL ARE WELCOME! BRING A FRIEND!

7 Ways Your Resume Makes You Look Unreliable
-
By Catherine ConlanMonster Contributing Writer If you want to score a job interview, your resume needs to make you look capable, skillful and excited to work. But job seekers frequently include information that gives the opposite impression. Make sure your resume is strong as it can be by avoiding these things that can make you look like an unreliable employee.

Weak word choicesUsing the phrase "responsible for" can make you sound as if you only do what you're told, says Joseph Terach, founder and CEO of Resume Deli. "When you're 'responsible' for something, it means you were assigned or supposed to do it. It doesn't mean you actually did it. It's a weak phrase that should be avoided."

Deflecting blameEven if it's true, don't imply that your failures, such as missed sales figures, were a result of your company being acquired or management changes, Terach says. "You may have time to explain that when you're interviewing, but on your resume, assuming your reader doesn't know who you are, you risk coming off looking like a complainer, or someone who passes the buck."

Short stints"If your resume shows that you've bounced from job to job within a short period of time, hiring managers will suspect you'll treat their company the same way," says Mark Slack of Resume Genius. He recommends listing years only on your work experience and leaving off jobs that are less relevant to the one you're applying for. "Besides making your work experience appear to be more stable, it's also just good practice to keep your resume lean and targeted."

Gaps between gigsEmployment gaps can raise a red flag, Slack says. "Even if you have those gaps for legitimate reasons, the hiring manager might think that you didn't work because you were lazy, unmotivated, unskilled or worse." It can be helpful to include a "work experience" section on your resume that includes ways you built your skills in your time off, such as through volunteer work or study.

A curious objectiveIf your job objective seems to fit your current employer, that will raise questions, says career coachPatty DeDominic. "If you currently work at a prestigious company, please don't state that your objective is to find work at a company that offers advancement and career opportunities. We wonder, have you been asked to leave? What's wrong with your current company?"

Oversharing
You may have had conflicts at past jobs, but your resume is no place to talk about them. "We usually eliminate resumes as 'unreliable' when the applicant mentions problems with previous jobs," says Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation. "It is shocking, but some people list issues with previous jobs, or 'reasons for departure/termination.' When people do that, it appears as though they are covering for something that eventually would come up through background checks."

Over-explainingIf you're applying for a job that's pays less than you make now or may look "beneath" you because of your experience, don't explain yourself on your resume, Sweeney says. "It is better to simply apply and let the question come up naturally, if at all. Suggesting the position is beneath them is not a good first sign."
