Be a Winner by Asking Power Questions

By Dennis McCafferty <http://www.baselinemag.com/cp/bio/Dennis-McCafferty/>
on 2012-05-09

We often think that we convey intelligence by coming up with clever
responses to questions. But that's only half of the equation. When attending
conference calls or meetings with <http://www.baselinemag.com/> executive
superstars, have you ever noticed how insightful and engaging their
questions are? It's not by accident. In the book "Power Questions: Build
Relationships, Win New Business, and Influence Others" (Wiley/Available
now), the authors demonstrate how work colleagues, managers and executives,
customers and business partners notice you based on your phrasing of
inquiries. To provide real-life examples, authors Andrew Sobel and Jerold
Panas give a "makeover" for many routine--and often banal, vague or
hostile--questions that are asked during job interviews, project meetings
and customer conversations. Following are 10 uninspiring questions, along
with power-infused versions. Sobel is an author who has served as a senior
management consultant for companies such as Citigroup, Xerox and Ernst &
Young. Panas is executive partner of Jerold Panas, Linzy & Partners, which
specializes in fundraising services and financial resource development. For

Debunking Common Resume Myths

There is no one best way to write a resume; there are no absolutes. Every
career counselor and recruiter has his or her own take on resume writing.
Even the formatting you use and the positions you list depend on the
industry, the specific job, and your experience. But amid all the
potentially conflicting opinions, there is some agreement on common resume
myths.

Companies Fall Short in Recruiting Candidates

By Dennis McCafferty <http://www.baselinemag.com/cp/bio/Dennis-McCafferty/>
on 2012-05-08

Many organizations are ready to <http://www.baselinemag.com/> hire, but a
significant number of them are ill-equipped to recruit effectively,
according to recent research from Allied Van Lines. Given that Allied is all
about moving people, part of the survey does focus on relocation issues.
However, the research also covers a broader range of key topics and reveals
that few human resources professionals consider their company's recruitment
efforts highly successful. Even with a strong recruitment program supporting
them, employers admit that they lose a significant share of top candidates
for open positions. Businesses that remain behind the curve here risk losing
their edge in what's emerging as a highly competitive market. "Recruiting
incentives could be stronger, and relocation packages could do more to
address some key areas of concern among candidates," says Jeff Knapton, vice
president of marketing for Allied Van Lines. "In addition, companies are not
using all the recruiting tools that they could, including social media.
These findings suggest a tremendous opportunity for companies wishing to
differentiate themselves in a competitive environment." About 500 HR
professionals in the U.S. took part in the research. For more about the
survey, click here. <http://www.alliedhriq.com>

If you're applying for a job at the entry level, you may be taking your
first stab at writing a resume, which is always exciting. But the writing
process gets even more exciting (and a bit more challenging) if you're
writing yours during a tough economic period.

Competition is usually a bit steeper when more workers are unemployed. This
means, even at the entry level, you will need to become a bit more creative
in the writing process by writing a resume that can compete in a recession.
Here's how you can get it done:

ABSTRACT:

The exponential demands of today's high-speed, high-change projects can
easily take a toll on one's personal life. Faced with eXtreme projects,
many project managers and their teams end up living lives that vacillate
between frantic and quiet desperation. If we are not careful, instead of
having projects, our projects will have us. As a result, most project
managers would rather be doing something else.

Self-Mastery - the practice of leading oneself - is the antidote to
self-misery. And the more successful we are at leading ourselves, the better
we are able to lead others.
