Age is an advantage when it comes to innovation

Posted by: "Ron Katz" ronhrkatz@yahoo.com   ronhrkatz

Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:02 pm (PDT)

I'm frequently asked how "more experienced", "longer tenured", okay, older
workers can use their age to an advantage when job-searching when so many
recruiters are openly or often discreetly discriminating against us because of
our age. In the post below is a good point to make when confronted by age-ism.

Younger people often think of us as unimaginative or set in our ways but in
point of fact, innovation gets better with age! We've seen what didn't work,
we're not going to make the kind of mistakes younger applicants will make on the
job, and most importantly, we have a greater perspective that allows us to
better connect the dots, because, as Gregg Farley points out, we know where the
dots are, and if I may add, where they can lead.

So don't let others frame you within their stereotypes of older workers. No, we
may not know every new language crossing the cloud (and many of us do) but we
have something that can't be taught.

Experience, savvy, and perspective. Don't accept their picture of you, paint
your own more accurate one.
Only the best,
Ron
