It's a personal brand, so it should be all about you, right?

Your accomplishments.
Your history.
Your personality.
Your unique perspective.

Right? Wrong.

If your personal brand is all about you, no one is going to care.

You will be ignored. People will yawn.

Your personal brand needs to answer WHY: Why do they care?

Article: The Length of a Resume Does NOT Matter (CareerRealism)

The Length of a Resume Does NOT Matter

* December 20, 2011
* Bruce Hurwitz <http://www.careerealism.com/author/bruce-hurwitz/>

I repeat, the length of a resume does NOT matter
<http://www.careerealism.com/business-cards-networking/> . I write this
because I am tired of reading blog postings on the subject and receiving
resumes from candidates who have been told it is a capital offense for a
resume to be longer than one or two pages. Style over substance?
Unbelievable!

Let's take a couple of examples:

See what Bruce says here:

Overcome Being Overqualified for Part-time Jobs

* December 20, 2011
* Tothego.com <http://www.careerealism.com/author/tothego/>

With so many people looking for full-time jobs and part-time jobs
<http://jobs.tothego.com/j/search/jcn_PART-TIME/> in this current economy,
many very highly qualified candidates find themselves in a position where
they need to take jobs for which they may be overqualified. Getting back to
work is, after all, the important thing, and sometimes - especially when
you've been hunting for a new job for some time - you'll take just about any
job you can get like engineer jobs, media jobs, sales jobs, and social
worker jobs.

In many instances, you may be considering taking part-time jobs in order to
continue searching for jobs <http://jobs.tothego.com/> in your chosen
profession. Working on a part-time basis still gives you the time and
freedom to continue your job hunt but also lets you keep some money rolling
in with which to pay everyday expenses.

While I agree with Bruce's point that substance is more important than
style, I strongly disagree that the length doesn't matter.

Almost every 3 page or longer resume I have seen is that long because
the writer hasn't learned to separate the wheat from the chaff. You
want to make points that communicate the essence of what you have
contributed to your past employers, and by inference, will contribute to
your next employer. This is not the place for a detailed biography,
talking about every duty you have performed.

Particularly when you are applying for an executive role, think about
what an overly long resume says about your communication skills:
"I don't know how to put together an executive level communication,
summarizing the critical points and making it easy for other busy
executives to 'get it.'"

Bruce claims that professional resume writers have lowered the bar here.
I have to agree that tons of resumes I have read that have been prepared
by such people aren't worth the paper they are written on. However, if
you find someone who really understands marketing concepts, and deeply
interviews you to get to the essence of your contributions, that is
someone worth listening to as to how things should be communicated on
your resume.

The 5 Hardest Jobs to Fill in 2012

While you're planning your expansion, you're going to find that talent is in
short supply, especially in these five areas.

By Keith Cline <http://www.inc.com/author/keith-cline> | @VentureFizz
<http://www.twitter.com/VentureFizz> | Dec 19, 2011

The year flew by mostly because it was a very, very busy one.

Although the economy continues to face many challenges, the startup and tech
industries are very much alive. The IPO window slightly opened up for
companies like LinkedIn, Pandora, Groupon, Zynga, and Carbonite. We saw
monster rounds of funding for companies like Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox.
The appetite for seed and angel investing was extremely active. Tech
incubators and accelerator programs kept popping up.

See the industries here:

Leverage Job Descriptions to Create Your Resume

Job descriptions often have meaty tidbits you can use when writing your
resume. Read through each posting carefully and select the bullet points you
want to address in your resume. For illustration purposes, below are mock
job-description bullet points along with accomplishment statements that
speak to each bullet point.

Organizing Tool Helps Manage Your Job Search

Website keeps job seekers on track

By KATHY KOWALENKO 4 November 2011

Looking for a job can be hard work. You have to keep track of details such as the names and locations of the companies you've contacted, the positions for which you've applied, and the dates of your applications. Then once you snag an interview, you need to remember the name of person you'll be meeting with, his or her contact information, and when the meeting is to take place.

Keeping all that information organized is not easy. Some job seekers jot down the details in a notepad or, worse, on scraps of paper, or try to squeeze it in an online calendar. Others create custom electronic spreadsheets. But none of those quite does the trick. That's where JobCannon <http://www.jobcannon.com> comes in. The free website, developed with the help of IEEE Member Matt Genovese, lets people search for jobs, keep track of the positions they've applied for, and set reminders to follow up on the status of applications.

11 Things You Should Never Put on Your Resume

Vivian Giang
Tuesday, December 20, 2011

A new batch of December graduates is getting ready to fly the coop in search
of a job and we hope they've already heard the bad news: There are a lot of
unemployed people out there.

If the market far exceeds demand, how do you make sure you get past the
resume screening process into the interviewing round? By making sure your
resume is flawless.

"Somewhere between 95 to 99% of resumes have stuff that shouldn't be on
there," Eli Amdur, senior coach and adviser from the Amdur Coaching and
Advisory Group, told us. "The general rule is if you put anything on there
that distracts the reader from your real accomplishments, then don't do it.
Resumes need to be concise and clear."

We've compiled some tips from career experts to make sure your resume steers
clear of the trash pile.

You've probably heard others rave about LinkedIn as a job search

recruiters have contacted them through the site, or that they've been
approached by hiring managers, just on the strength of their profiles.

But what if this isn't happening for you? How can you figure out what might
be wrong?

These common LinkedIn missteps can make the difference between having all
the action pass you by or realizing the full power of the site:
