Alex:

Hope all is well!

I saw that you are giving a presentation at the Hamilton Library next week.  I won't be able to attend due to work (which is a good thing).

We are looking to fill 3 positions in our call center at Abbott Point of Care.  The individuals should be comfortable with computers and have a background as a lab technician or experience working with lab equipment.  EMT and LPN background/experience is also a plus.  Most importantly is the ability to interact with customers and be a problem solver.  If you know of anyone with these credentials, please have them call me and I can guide them through the online application process.

Does Your Résumé Pass the 10 Second Test?

Dear Career Tips (Need a Second Chance)
Dear Robert,
Welcome to the next part of my series, "3 Questions Your Résumé Must Address" - see the lead article below.

Last month Allan Hayes of Silicon Valley's Emerson-Hayes and I presented a webinar, "Add Magic to Your Branding and Marketing."  While it's too late to catch the webinar itself, Allan was gracious enough to provide a pdf package that will walk you through many of the critical links and concepts he discussed. If you'd like a copy, drop me a note at John@JHACareers.com.
As always, send me your questions about your biggest frustrations with your own Career Search, or the greatest roadblocks to your Career Growth at Advice@JHACareers.com
~~~~~~~~~~
Does Your Résumé Pass the 10 Second Test?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Last month I presented the first of 3 questions your résumé must address to get a hiring manager's attention:

Does it present a strong, professional appearance?

(To catch up on the series, visit this link:
www.JHACareers.com/WriteAPowerfulResume.htm)

Once you've passed that hurdle, you need to concentrate on #2:

 Does it Pass the 10 Second Test?

Imagine a desk or inbox cluttered with hundreds or even thousands of résumés.
That's the situation facing every gatekeeper in the job application process: external and internal recruiters, human resource screeners, etc.

It's the screener's job to review those stacks and determine which are worth passing on to the next stage in the process. There's no way they are going to carefully read every document. How much time do you think they give to any one résumé in their initial screening?

Obviously it varies, but it's not very long. Your job is to make that 1st 10 seconds count, so that the reader decides yours is worth investing the time to read further.

How do you do that?

By starting your résumé with a clear value proposition - a description of exactly what the 'product' is that I might be buying. Don't make the reader work hard to figure it out, poring through the details of your jobs to assess the set of skills and experience you might bring to the table ... because most won't bother. Tell what you have to offer right up front.

Don't make the rookie mistake of thinking this requires an objective statement. Such a statement has no place in a résumé:
1. I don't care about your objectives until I know if you can satisfy mine.
2. Including an objective statement sends the signal that you are more interested in achieving your own goals than in helping me achieve mine.
3. It's a distraction from your mission - to get me interested in talking to or hiring you - and a waste of those precious first 10 seconds of review.

What you need to do is think about the key skills, types of experience and qualities you bring to the table that make up the package in which I might be interested. Then you need to present those in a way that makes them believable.

How?

By including statements about the results you might be able to produce or have produced in the past, and the problems you can solve or have solved, through the application of those skills, types of experience and qualities.

And be sure to avoid empty phrases like,"proven results in...", "results-oriented professional", "demonstrated success in", "excellent communication skills" and "transferable skills." The statements themselves are meaningless (or in the last case, actually negative). Provide the demonstrations instead.

For example, the statement "Results-oriented director of international operations." tells me little, but instead including a demonstration makes it pop:

"Director of international operations who increased profits 25% over 3 years."

Next month I'll get into the final question your résumé must address to get a hiring manager's attention.

Dear Career Tips (Need a Second Chance)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a Masters Degree and the last 5 years have been really tough. I've been in 5 different districts but none of the administrators would share with me why I wasn't renewed and had to resign. So, I've tried networking but most of the people in the group were in other fields; nobody was really in education.
My biggest frustration is that even though I've made mistakes nobody will give me a second chance or a break to rebuild my reputation. Right now I'm working at minimum wage.
Need a Second Chance
DearSecond Chance:With 5 different instances of non-renewal, you must think that there is something going wrong.  If the administrators won't share, what about other people you've worked with?
Don't focus the discussion on why you didn't get renewed, which is an HR issue that people may feel reluctant to talk about, or even consider that they are prohibited from discussing. Concentrate your approach on self-improvement.  For example, you could approach someone along these lines:
"Jim, you've worked with me in the past, and I respect your opinion.  I'm looking for constructive feedback on what I can work on to make myself more effective in my career..."
In fact, if you approach it this way, one of those past administrators might now be willing to give you some feedback.
Then you need to be very careful not to be at all defensive about what you hear.  As soon as you try to excuse what you did or your style, or discount the feedback in any way, you will stop the flow of honest feedback.  See the article linked below for help on how to approach these conversations.
As to your networking, look for groups where you are going to encounter more people in education.  When you do go to a group with mostly people outside of education, why not go to the meeting organizers and explain who you are most interested in meeting, and let them help you find the ones who might be your best connections?  Even with those outside of your field, if you can first create some engagement, you can then (in a follow-up meeting, not at the event) work on getting them to introduce you to people in your field.  Almost everyone will know at least some people who could be helpful to you, if you first focus on building a relationship with them.
Good luck!
www.JHACareers.com/KnowHowYoureDoing.htm
 Submit your own questions about issues you face in your search or your career, and I'll address them in a future issue (keeping you anonymous, of course, unless you specifically tell me to do otherwise).  And you won't have to wait for the publication - I'll respond to you directly in the meanwhile.
