The Director, Web Architecture role's responsibilities are to construct and implement the technical design for Covance's web and portal based applications. This includes the design and development of web architectural elements, including data, security, and mobility requirements. The position involves the selection of Web/Portal application hardware and software platforms and designing an application framework to support Covance's web application needs. This position also needs to work with other web development resources to manage web project deliveries and on-going support of web applications. Exceptional knowledge of various Web/Portal development platforms is required, with emphasis on content management systems and designing for mobility.
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare and deliver long-term strategic plan for Web/Portal development and presence, including standards and guidelines for technical design, based on business goals and input from stakeholders.
- Apply user-centered design methodologies to create high-quality interactive experiences that drive consumer engagement, adoption, and usage.
- Internalize user needs by gathering competitive and best-practices research, site metrics, voice-of-the-customer, and industry trends.
- Work closely with the business unit subject matter experts and shared services IT teams to augment and synthesize business requirements.
- Create information architecture and interaction design documents, including: site maps, concept diagrams, user personas or profiles, user scenarios, wireframes, task flows, site inventory, template guidelines.
- Conduct usability testing to validate web and mobile design solutions, and apply research findings accordingly.
- Mentor team members and educate web-channel peers on user-experience best practices.
- Own and manage multiple assignments and deliver on time meeting milestones, with high quality and enable to release as scheduled. Report progress to management and project management.
Education/Qualifications - Bachelor's degree

- 7-10 + years experience designing and implementing web-based products or enterprise web and portal applications, with an emphasis on complex interaction design.
- Extensive hands-on knowledge of web and portal application architecture and development, database development, project management, knowledge management, social media, enterprise search and business process automation.
- Applied knowledge of user-centered design principles and interaction-design best practices and standards.
- Deep experience working with the Pharmaceutical or Life Science industry, and understanding and translating business requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative design sessions.
Experience - 10+ years experience with relational database development (SQL Server and Oracle)
- 5+ years experience with .Net technologies (ASP.Net, MVC, LINQ, WPF)
- Experience with enterprise collaboration and social media technologies
- Experience with web application development using JavaScript, HTML and CSS
- Experience with service oriented architectures with SOAP/REST services
- Experience with NoSQL and semantic web technologies (RDF, SPARQL)
- Experience with cloud computing (EC2, S3, DynamoDB)
