Subject: The WorkPlace HealthTECH Forum

WorkPlace, Inc. prides itself on taking leadership
roles in creating a seamless, coordinated
system of education, training and employment for our
community. To this end, we are responding to the recently
established national goal of the Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS): that Electronic
Health Records system (EHR) should be used in every
physician practice and hospital across the nation as
quickly as possible. HHS estimates that over
50,000 new qualified workers will be needed to help
implement these systems across the county.

Because our community will also be impacted, we have
partnered with Human Resource Marketing
Services, Inc., (HRMS) to produce the HealthTECH
Workforce Forum to help organizations prepare and
execute an effective Health IT workforce
development plan. Our event, planned for May 19th at
the Stamford campus of the University of Connecticut.

In the morning and during lunch, participants will hear
from over 20 senior-level content experts
representing many segments of the public and private
healthcare community. These experts will provide
strategic and tactical insights on how recent
federal healthcare legislation will impact our region’s
Health IT and EHR workforce. Attendees, speakers and
sponsors will include:

* Employers from a variety of healthcare providers
* Education and training organizations from K-12
through University
* Public health clinics
* Government officials from city, county, state
and federal agencies
* Community-based healthcare agencies
* Medical device manufacturers, vendors and
consultants
* Health and medical professional associations.

In the afternoon, students, incumbent workers and
career changers will attend HealthTECH
Workforce Forum career advancement workshops
and visit recruiting exhibitors. They will learn about new
career ladders and the skills they will need to meet
the demands of Electronic Health Records
adoption as well as have direct access to hiring employers,
EHR educational programs and community based agencies.

The link below provides information regarding the
upcoming HealthTECH Career Forum which The
WorkPlace is sponsoring. I thought it might be of
interest to people who network with your organization.
I have also attached a flier if that is
easier to distribute.

Please feel free to distribute this information as you
see fit. I hope you can join us that day.

Age question during an interview

Posted by: "joecardinale56" colorguard1@comcast.net   joecardinale56

Wed Apr 20, 2011 3:02 pm (PDT)

Recently I had an interview with a major corporation and the HR representative asked me to tell him the major news stories that affected me when I graduated college. This was, of course, another way of asking me how old I was. I was anticipating some type of age question but was taken back by this particular question. I answered by saying the issues that affected me are the same as today, a bad economy and few jobs. I then waited for the enxt question. Hopefully, that was a sufficient answer. I am still waiting to hear if I got the job.

That's an interesting interview question! You're correct....your answer
definitely would indicate your age (assuming the recruiter has a good command of
20th century history).

However, it could provide many other sorts of insight as well. For example, how
did you get the news...Read the newspaper? Subscribe to Time or Newsweek, rely
on TV news? Your responses may indicate something about your level of curiosity
and/or commitment to learning. And which events do you recall/choose to
mention? World events on distant shores? A local crime spree in your immediate
community? The biggest album? What you paid at the pump? These answers may
indicate something about your "sphere" of interest....do you think in broad,
macro terms, or do you tend to focus on the immediate environment? When telling
your story, do you cite specific facts/figures, or relate general concepts
("headlines") only? You get the idea.

Finally, the question is indeed provocative...as many baby-boomers will suspect
that the interviewer is simply trying to guess our age. So....In that case, how
do we respond? Walk out? Protest an unfair question? Simply refuse to answer
the question? Meekly comply? Whatever your approach, you will demonstrate your
ability to handle a potentially uncomfortable situation...much, much more
powerfully than any resume bullet or story ever could convey!

For what it's worth, I think your response was solid: You demonstrated your
ability to recall the external environment -- (how many of us spent four years
in academic bubbles)?!? You also demonstrated your ability to see patterns in
disparate data sets and articulate those connections. And finally, if the
recruiter was trying to provoke you, you remained cool under pressure.

PS. If the recruiter was much younger, he simply may have been curious to learn
about the "old days," asking what he thought was a benign conversation
opener....so maybe we should cut him some slack. Recently, one of my friends
was working with a classroom of fifth-graders. She asked them to name a natural
resource. The kids' immediate first response? "Google."

Good luck!
