CNG - Final Face-to-Face Meeting
Thursday May 3, 2012
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: Bernards Township Library
Street: 32 South Maple Ave
City State Zip: Basking Ridge, NJ 07920

Notes:
We have some bad news and some good news for CNG members.

The bad news........and the good news…....

Career Networking Group has been so successful in helping people land that it is no longer needed to the extent it used to be. Attendance has steadily declined, at least in part, because of the many other fine networking groups in the area.

Consequently, your facilitators (Alex Freund, Laura Goddard, John Hadley, Rene McGee) have decided to discontinue the face-to-face CNG meetings after our May 3rd meeting.

For May 3rd, we will do some speed networking, so bring your business cards. Come to our last meeting to say goodbye, meet some great folks, hopefully expand your relationships, and perhaps join the facilitators at the Ridge Tavern to raise a glass and toast a good organization that has served more than a thousand people over the years.

Now for some more good news.........

We will keep the CNG Yahoo!Groups website alive, and we hope you will continue your membership. It has, and will continue to be, an excellent source of articles, job postings and networking for CNG members.

We will be opening the CNG LinkedIn group to all folks who live in the area and have requested to join. This will expand your contacts and hopefully help you as you network your way to your next position.

Now for even better news.........

The Bernards Township Library is organizing a career-focused book club that will meet monthly. I'm sure you will be hearing a lot more shortly about this great concept.

The CNG facilitators are supporting this endeavor in an advisory capacity. The club will focus on discussion of books on business, job search, career management -- anything that can help you grow in your career and business life. Some will be New York Times be

Article: Employer Formula for Writing an Attention Grabbing Cover Le

Employer Formula for Writing an Attention Grabbing Cover Letter

Hiring managers agree that good cover letters are very influential. Since
the average professional position usually competes against many other
applicants, you absolutely MUST grab the employer's attention in your first
opening sentence. Two typical openings fail miserably.

The worst culprit is, "I am writing to apply for the ad that I saw in
Sunday's paper." This opening is used by most candidates, so when an
employer is reviewing dozens of applicants they see these words so often
their mind automatically just skims by it and everything else on the page.

Likewise, the second opening - "You're a great company" - tells the employer
something they already know.

Neither opening captures the employer's attention. The Power Impact
Technique begins with a strong opening which focuses on filling the
employer's needs. 96% of the hiring managers participating in our national
survey, conducted for my book Winning Cover Letters selected The Power
Impact Technique as their preferred letter writing style. Once you've
learned this writing style, you'll never spend hours slaving over a cover
letter again.

"A poor opening paragraph is why many job hunters fail," said CEO Robert
Waldt. "It is usually a common, general sentence. You need to immediately
establish something unique about the candidate. I like to see the particular
reason - background or experience - that tells me why I should hire the
person right at the beginning of the letter."

The Power Impact Technique is basically a two-step process in which you:

Slideshow: Troubling Truths About Hiring Practices (BaselineMag)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   norsemantechnology

Tue May 1, 2012 7:33 pm (PDT)

You've probably sat at your desk on more than one occasion and asked
yourself, "How did that person ever get his/her job?" A recent survey from
TEKsystems provides one likely answer. The study reveals that a lack of
thoroughness during the screening process of IT
<http://www.baselinemag.com/> job applicants may contribute significantly to
these problems. Among reported lapses, candidates are getting away with
résumé misrepresentations, and reference checking is spotty at best. As a
result, the survey indicates, many tech workers are hired for positions for
which they aren't qualified. "If nearly half of your team were unqualified
for their positions, you'd feel the pain—and so would your customers," says
Rachel Russell, TEKsystems director. "Given the number of business demands
IT departments must satisfy, quality screening practices are essential to
gaining a competitive advantage." More than 2,050 IT professionals took part
in the research. For more about the survey, click here.
