Embarrassing E-mails: Don't Let This Happen to You!

July 10, 2012 . by Ariella Coombs
<http://www.careerealism.com/author/ariella/>

Everyone knows how important it is to double check your e-mail
<http://www.careerealism.com/email-mistake-hurt-career/> attachments,
especially if you're applying for a job.

However, sometimes the wrong file can find its way to an important message.

This nightmare happened to one girl, who accidentally sent a potential
employer an e-mail attached with a scary photo of Nicolas Cage
<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/09/accidental-nic-cage-resume-picture
_n_1659343.html?utm_hp_ref=comedy> instead of her resume and cover letter.

Talk about a bad first impression.

As a result of the innocent screw up, she probably didn't even get an e-mail
back for a potential job. Sounds frustrating, huh?

Don't let these careless mistakes cause big embarrassment and missed
opportunities. Here are seven common errors to check for before you hit the
"Send" button.

See the seven errors here (there are many more):

100% Complete LinkedIn Profiles: A Dilemma for Job Seekers

In my How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile webinar
<http://www.ilostmyjob.com/the-essay-expert/> on June 22, 2012, delivered
for ilostmyjob.com <http://www.ilostmyjob.com/> , an important question
arose: If you are a job seeker, how should you complete the "current
position" item in your profile?

LinkedIn presents job seekers with a dilemma: The site requires an
"up-to-date current position (with a description)" for a 100% complete
profile (see Profile Completeness list
<http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=pop%2Fpop_more_profile_completeness> on
LinkedIn); and according to LinkedIn, 100% complete profiles are 40 times
more likely to be viewed. But if you are a job seeker, you might not have a
current position other than "job seeker." Should you create a "filler" job
description to be 100% complete? Or should you hope that 95%-or-so complete
is enough?

'Working From Home' Without Slacking Off

. By Sue Shellenbarger

Amy Johnson works from her home in Dixon, Ill., talking with clients and
filing reports for her job as a fingerprint technician. In one way, though,
she might as well be sitting at a desk next to her boss in Chicago.

Using a computer-monitoring program, Timothy Daniels, vice president of
operations for Accurate Biometrics, can track whether Ms. Johnson and other
employees are working-or slacking off. Once a week, he looks at summaries of
"what websites they're using, and for how long," he says. "It enables us to
keep a watchful eye without being over-invasive."

Ms. Johnson knows her computer is monitored, but .

How to Make a Résumé That Works

By RUTH MANTELL
<http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=RUTH+MANTELL&bylinesearch=t
rue>

You've tweaked and crafted your résumé, spell-checked it at least twice. But
have you included a "QR code"?

Those are the bar codes that are popping up in newspapers, on consumer
products and elsewhere, that can be scanned by smartphones. Some people are
adding these to their résumés to direct employers to online portfolios,
contact information and other application materials.

"People are definitely getting creative," says Rosemary Haefner, vice
president of human resources at jobs site CareerBuilder.com. "Individuals
can create a code and link it to other information about their background."

Other creative strategies to make a résumé stand out include using
infographics and videos, which highlight job seekers' accomplishments and
communication and technical skills.

Several months ago, an applicant's video résumé for a human-resources role
at CareerBuilder caught Ms. Haefner's eye. While the applicant didn't win
the position, Ms. Haefner says she was impressed.

How to Calculate the Length of a Job Search

July 10, 2012 . by J.T. O'Donnell
<http://www.careerealism.com/author/jt-odonnell/>

I get asked this question all the time inside CareerHMO, "J.T., given my
situation, how long do you think my job search
<http://www.careerealism.com/job-search-solution/> will take?"

As you can imagine, I can't predict an exact number. I can tell you there is
a simple rule of thumb that has been around for years in my industry that
goes like this:

For every $10,000 you want to make in salary, expect one month of job
search.
