How Do You Make the Transition From Sales to Marketing?

July 7, 2012 . by J.T. <http://www.careerealism.com/author/jt-and-dale/> &
Dale .

Dear J.T. & Dale: I have a friend who graduated from college with a degree
in international business/marketing
<http://www.careerealism.com/career-marketing-manager/> . In the tough
economy, she was forced to take a sales assistant position, and now she
can't get out of sales.

She wants to get back into marketing. She's been out of school four years.
How does she transition back to marketing? Will she have to start over?
Salary is a concern. -Tina

DALE: Many people use "sales
<http://www.careerealism.com/interviewing-sales-jobs/> " and "marketing"
synonymously, so we should take a minute to explain how, in corporate life,
they differ.

See how to resolve this conundrum here:

No. 1 Way To Jump Start A Stalled Job Search

. By J.T. O'Donnell
<http://jobs.aol.com/articles/bloggers/j-t-odonnell/>

Posted May 1st 2012 @ 9:15AM

A recent study shows the average job seeker gives up looking for work after
five months. Meanwhile, the length of time it takes to find work
<http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2012/04/24/5-reasons-its-taking-you-so-long-to
-find-a-job/> in the US is currently hovering at more than seven months. If
you've been looking for a job for a while, the evidence suggests now is not
the time to quit. And yet, nothing feels as depressing as a stalled job
search, right? Well, good news, the following technique can help.

It's Time for a Little "Disruptive Innovation" (a.k.a. Stop Looking for a
Job!)

The answer to jump-starting a stalled job search is to actually stop looking
for a job. That's right. Stop looking for a job - and start looking for a
problem to solve. The fancy term for this technique is "disruptive
innovation
<http://video.aoljobs.com/the-disruptive-power-of-the-generative-internet-51
1992872> ." Wikipedia describes it as "an innovation that helps create a new
market and value network." I call it the common sense approach to finding
work in an insanely competitive job market.

Here's how it works:

Are social media making the resume obsolete?

Doug Gross, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* Thanks to growing number of Web tools, some say the resume is
already obsolete
* Job recruiter says she never accepts a paper resume
* One New York firm asked for Twitter, blog posts, videos -- but not
resumes
* Reports say Facebook may be launching a jobs board

(CNN) -- Could the days of trying to cram all your professional
accomplishments onto a single sheet of paper be a thing of the past?

Some job experts say we're already there. With news that Facebook might be
joining the ranks
<http://www.hlntv.com/article/2012/07/09/facebook-jobs-board-recruiting-link
edin> of online-employment brokers, it's looking more and more like the
old-fashioned resume might be growing obsolete.

Facebook plans to launch its own jobs board, working with some existing
sites to let users search listings, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
ources-20120706-00623> Yes, that's right: People may be looking for jobs on
the same site where photos of their youthful indiscretions could turn off
potential employers.

It's not certain whether such a Facebook feature will pan out (Facebook
isn't commenting, and the Journal cites unnamed sources). But in many ways,
we're already in a post-resume era.

What hiring manager is going to make a decision based on an e-mail
attachment when they can browse your LinkedIn and Facebook profiles, read
the gory details in your blog and hit Google to find out more about you --
good or bad -- all in one sitting?
