Article: Job Seekers, Be Creative and Flexible (WSJ)

Job Seekers, Be Creative and Flexible

By Ruth Mantell

In 2012, creativity and adaptability will be key to landing and keeping a
job for many workers, as staff levels remain lean and employees are expected
to respond to a wide variety of demands, experts say.

Economists don't expect loads of job growth, but there could be
opportunities in areas such as health care, professional services, retail
and some manufacturing, says Harry Holzer, a public-policy professor at
Georgetown University. Also, continuing churn in the labor market means that
even in areas with few new jobs, there will still be openings when workers
move around.

How to Make Your Cover Letter a Perfect Fit for Any Opening

Let's face it, a blanket cover letter
<http://www.careerealism.com/cover-letter-mechanics-how-to-write-a-good-one/
> just isn't going to cut it these days. So how can you make the best use
of your time while maximizing your results? Here are a few simple steps to
customizing your cover letters.

(And if you don't think you SHOULD customize your cover letter for each
application you submit, then we have bigger problems than I thought.)

3 Rules to Smart Business Card Etiquette

. January 2, 2012

. Tai Goodwin <http://www.careerealism.com/author/tai-goodwin/>

There's an etiquette to using a business card
<http://www.careerealism.com/top-10-people-you-must-have-in-your-network/>
when networking. Don't mess it up!

Suppose you were out having lunch with a new business acquaintance and when
your food was delivered to the table, your lunch partner reached over with
her hand and sampled your meal. What would you think? That they were rude -
lacking proper social etiquette, right? You'd be offended and probably lose
your appetite. Besides ranking their social grace at zero, you'd also
seriously question their professional competence as well.

The example I shared above is extreme. But here's the point:

So, what's the point? Take a look here:

Worst LinkedIn Summary Ever

. December 29, 2011

. J.T. O'Donnell <http://www.careerealism.com/author/jt-odonnell/>

Okay folks, I'm going to give it to you straight: There are certain phrases
when used in a LinkedIn profile summary have the same effect as nails on a
chalkboard.

In other words, it's such a turn-off as a hiring manager, it's hard to focus
on your profile as being credible after reading them. Recently, this is the
profile summary someone asked me to review. I've underlined the phrases that
make me want to cover my ears and run from my computer screen yelling,
"NOOOOO. Not again!"

A dynamic leader with the ability to drive change and proven track record of
high accomplishments in various areas. Highly organized individual, believes
in empowerment and team work, highly adaptable, strong business sense,
effective communicator, result-oriented and can-do attitude.

What makes me cringe when I read this?
