When faced with a challenging job market, there are alternative choices you
can make that may offer different opportunities than a traditional career
path. Sometimes, you just need to "think outside of the box."

TCN's November 26th meeting will feature a presentation by Costa Rodis and
Felicia Halpert from Bergen IT. They will discuss the benefits and risks of
being an independently-owned local business, and some of the challenges and
successes they've encountered choosing this path rather than pursuing
positions in the corporate world.

----------------------------------------

Monday, November 26th, 7:00-9:00 PM
Barnert Temple, 747 Route 208 South, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417

Directions to Barnert Temple:
http://barnerttemple.org/about_us/about_us.php3?page=249
(Don't trust your GPS on this one, use these directions.)

----------------------------------------

Bergen IT is a technology services company focused on serving the needs of
businesses and homes in Northern NJ. Its goal is to provide IT support and
technical expertise to companies and professionals that either do not have
access to full-time technical staff, or seek back-up support for overloaded
in-house employees. The company offers a range of computer, networking,
database, telephony, audio, and project management assistance. It also
recently added website and editorial development to its portfolio of
services.

For more information about Bergen IT please go to: http://www.bergenit.net.

Costa Rodis is the president of Bergen IT. He combines nearly 30 years of
experience in the IT field with a sharp focus on how new technologies can
solve the challenges faced by businesses and professionals. Costa has
worked in the IT departments of major law firms, and as an independent
consultant and trainer in New York City and in northern NJ. He's
comfortable with software and hardware, PCs and Macs, Windows and OSX,
desktops and laptops, smart phones and tablets, as well as a range of audio
and telephony systems.

Felicia Halpert is the vice president of Bergen IT. Her focus is on
business development as well as website and editorial services. She
recently came to the company after many years in the educational media
product development space. Felicia has been the Editorial
Director/Executive Producer for Scholastic's website for schools, as well
as a Media Director and Operations Manager for Pearson's Higher Education
group. She also has experience as an editor and award-winning writer for
magazines and newspapers.

----------------------------------------

We look forward to seeing you at Barnert Temple on Monday, November 26th
for our evening with Costa Rodis and Felicia Halpert from Bergen IT. Please
feel free to arrive at 6:30pm for extra open networking time, and bring a
friend! RSVP's are not required.

Next month, we will meet on December 17th (please note, different day, NOT
the 4th Monday), for an open networking meeting with your TCN friends and
colleagues.

week I had the pleasure of presenting during "office hours" for The Levo
League<http://p.feedblitz.com/t2.asp?/237588/11082756/0/http://www.levoleague.com/>,
a new community for professional women of the Millennial generation.

I love the mission of the organization — Levo is the Latin root of the word
"elevate," which captures the organization's mission for professional women
to ascend together and achieve their career dreams – and I had fun
answering questions from Levo Leaguers about social media and personal
branding.

Here are some of the tips I shared for networking and building a strong
personal brand through social media:

- *Take a "clicks and mix" approach to networking online*. "Clicks and
mix" is a phrase I borrowed from my friend and social media expert, Diane
Danielson. It means to combine the online and offline in your networking
efforts. For instance, you can get an introduction via social media, but
then make a date to meet for coffee. Never hide behind your computer screen.
- *Get serious about your LinkedIn profile*. The very top of your
LinkedIn profile is the first thing people notice. Make sure you have a
great professional headshot on your profile, and make sure your profile
headline is a broad description of who you are, including keywords that a
recruiter or client might use to search for you.
- *Use Twitter as a research tool*. Think of Twitter as your own
personal news feed. Create a stream or list) where all you're following are
companies you want to work for or clients you want to pursue. Have a stream
or list that is totally career related. (You can follow Ashton and Lady
Gaga elsewhere!)
