...it's the right time for you Boomers to put on your Mentor hats and lend a hand to the youngsters. You never know which one of them might become the next Hiring Manager that will be interviewing you!
I recently came across a plea from a college student (from my alma mater Rutgers) for advice. Here is what I wrote to her:
"Sounds like you have a wonderful background for the field you are seeking to break into!
Here are just a few questions to provoke your thinking and maybe advance your search.
1. Are you looking in New York City? It's a huge market for your field.
2. Are you open to relocation? In addition to NYC, there are many huge markets with opportunity in your field right now.
3. Are you utilizing your network to catapult you toward opportunity? All of the people you know from all of your past experiences are potential springboards to your future. Don't rule anyone out. You never know who they know.
4. Are you focused on penetrating target companies that interest you the most? Most job hunters look at job ads, hoping the right job will come along. Sometimes it does. But the better route is to identify the companies you have an interest in and aggressively (but nicely) market yourself into them.
5. Are you establishing your own brand image via social media outlets? This can take any number of forms (e.g. blogging, twitter, facebook, youtube, etc), thanks to today's burgeoning social media space.
6. What are you most passionate about? Many job hunters say "I just want a job." While that's an understandable thing to say, millions are also saying the same thing. What will make you stand out from the rest? My son David, who just graduated from Rutgers with a degree in Journalism says "I want a job in journalism covering culture and the arts in New York City." Notice that his passions shine through.
Focus on what you bring to the table and lead with those assets in your communication to prospective employers.

Dear Lists & Friends,
Does anyone need the services of two recent college graduates with skills in Communication from Rutgers?
My son Kevin is a film maker with Final Cut Pro editing skills and experience, including work on the show "Chopped" on Food Network in NY.
My son David is a journalist with excellent research and writing skills and experience, including the 911 Project, and editorial work on Joonbug in NY.
If anyone has any networking leads for these two young talents, please let me know.
