                                                                                                                          ARE YOU ATTENDING?  LET ME KNOW.

AITP Members and Friends of the Garden State Chapter

Our next AITP meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12th at Jim Johnston's Steak House in Roseland.  The speaker topic this month isThreats to Data Security and How Combat Them.

You will have to admit that our gurus
in the back room once again have come up with a timely and most interesting topic.  For most IT pros data security is a serious and often urgent problem that they must face. Our speaker is a data security expert who is well experienced in all aspects of protecting corporate and personal information and intellectual property. I really think you will enjoy this meeting.

Again, I kindly ask that you let me know if you will be attending.

Thanks,
Doug Hobby

Threats to Data Security and How Combat Them - Dave Mertz

===================================
Many organizations have traditionally focused on infrastructure security and preventative controls as the foundation of their security program. These enterprises are now challenged to move beyond this view and evolve to a "datacentric" security approach, which is harder to implement but can yield a higher return. Dave will discuss the new skills and capabilities required by the datacentric approach to security. He will also discuss threats to data security originating from insiders as well as demands from non-conventional sources such as regulators and privacy laws. Additionally, Dave will speak about the context of data security controls (where they fit in the universe of other controls), their limitations, effort to implement, and the considerable results when done correctly.

The Speaker

=========
Dave Mertz is an Information Security Consultant with Security Risk Advisors. He has been with them for over 3 years and specializes in developing data security strategies and capability improvements for his clients using Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technologies. Dave focuses on helping clients define and locate sensitive data within their business processes. He works to document their use cases and risks and then designs and implements robust security processes to improve their security and, thus, the organization's overall data security environment. Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems from Drexel University.

President's Comments

================
Once again the Chapter's Programming Committee came up with a timely and relevant IT speaker's topic. We are always striving to provide knowledgeable speakers on topics of interest to a good percentage of IT people. Please let me know if you have a topic suggestion for a future meeting. The committee will give it serious consideration.

I was disappointed at the relatively weak turnout at last month's meeting on the subject of 3D Printing. It was one of our best meetings ever. The speaker from the Picatinny Arsenal was a noted authority on 3D Printing. As a result of his many years of practical experience with 3D Printing he possessed a vast knowledge of the technology, which he shared with the group in a most interesting manner. If you had the opportunity to go, but decided not to, shame on you. You lost out.
