Make Independent Contracting Work For You

27 May 2011

By Joanna Boydak, LiveCareer

Having a hard time finding permanent work? Economic conditions have forced
companies to take on a new trend in hiring contract employees. In fact,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about a quarter of all jobs
added in 2010 by private sector employers were temporary positions.

While temporary workers are in better shape than the unemployed, contractors
may miss the perks of their permanent counterparts such as job security,
health benefits, paid time-off and career development.

There are, however, many upsides to a contract position such as the
opportunity to rub-elbows with individuals in your industry, a flexible
schedule and the chance that your work will become long-term if your manager
sees that the position needs to be filled permanently.

It can be a smart career move, but don't get caught without these seven
contractor survival tips:

Our speaker for Thursday has offered that if you are planning on coming
to Thursday's meeting, you can send her your resume in advance, and she
will select from those to use as live examples at our workshop. This is
a great opportunity to get valuable, specific critique on the spot from
an acknowledged expert!

I encourage everyone who is planning on attending to take advantage of
this - but you must get your resume to her at
lisa.rangel@chameleonresumes.com
<MailTo:lisa.rangel@chameleonresumes.com> , noting that it's for the CNG
meeting, by end of day Monday for it to be considered for inclusion.
