Job Description

Our client is looking for a Ruby/DevOps Engineer to assist in the design, configuration, deployment and management of SaaS software onto the Amazon Web Services and other IaaS platforms. We use automated configuration management tools (Opscode Chef) and in-house management and monitoring software.

The Cloud Engineer will be responsible for implementing new infrastructures and managing existing systems, utilizing our preferred configuration management toolset. This will include coding new Chef configuration management cookbooks (Ruby-based DSL, pure Ruby) as well as performing traditional Ops tasks in the design and testing of new configurations. This involves Ops scripting, linux tweaking, testing new infrastructure software components and services, and the care and feeding of monitoring/reporting systems.

Responsibility Overview

* Ensure all nodes are properly configured and in perfect running state.
* Ensure all systems can scale smoothly while maintaining high availability.
* Help us maintain a comprehensive infrastructure policy.
* Review and update Chef cookbooks based on new product requirements.
* Implement automated infrastructure testing.
* Work with Dev team customers to ensure their software transitions smoothly into production
* Share operational responsibility for a set of the client's hosted products as on-call level 2 response (In-house NOC team is level 1)

Job Qualifications

Critical Experience:
* 5+ yrs of Linux and/or Windows System Administration (3+ yrs Linux minimum)
* 2+ yrs supporting customer-facing (production) systems
* 6 months+ experience with Ruby plus one other system scripting language (bash/python/perl/etc)
* Experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2/ELB/RDS/S3 etc.) or equivalent IaaS provider
* Experience with installation and mgmt of Ruby stack server software (nginx, passenger, apache, etc.)
* Experience with source control systems (git/svn etc.)

Strong Pluses:
* Ruby on Rails development experience
* Automated Config Mgmt system experience (Opscode Chef, Puppet/mcollective, etc)
* Windows Server production mgmt experience
* Documentation/Tech Writing experience

Job-Specific Competencies:
* System Administration: Can plan, execute and document deployment of infrastructure and application code. Can execute documented action plans precisely as well as diagnose problems outside standard guides and improvise responses as well as design formal response plans, and knows when to use which.
* Configuration Management Programming: Can translate deployment requirements into automation code and identify best practices
* Technical Communication: Effectively communicates technical information and processes to relevant stakeholders (e.g. cross-function groups, internal and/or external clients)
