It is hard to visualize numbers and their relative meaning. The following
30 seconds YouTube link depicts the rate of unemployment in the US from 2007
to present. Watching this will make the picture clear.

Letting Go of Excuses and Embracing Responsibility

Published January 31, 2010 by: Po-Yi Liu

<http://www.associatedcontent.com/>

The Importance of Breaking the Habit of Making Excuses at Work

As Albert Ellis once said, "The best years of your life are the ones in
which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your
mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own
destiny".

His wisdom can also be applied to the workplace. It is well known that
employees who exude effective behaviours can become real assets to
organizations and businesses. Especially living in a fast-paced society, it
is important for workers to be able to handle the demands, resources,
projects, and tasks that are being handed to them with competence and
confidence. One of the most common and yet very desirable trait to have as
an employee is learning how not to make excuses and take ownership of what
s/he says, thinks, and does.

People enjoy working with those who have this trait. Employers like it even
more because it helps create a sense of trust. Workers who accept
responsibility, rather than complain, are seen as reliable, confidence, and
competent.

Raise your hands if you've ever made excuses for things at work? I certainly
did in the past. It is easy to push the blame onto something or someone
else. It is often unconsciously done so because it's tempting to ignore
facing our part in creating or co-creating consequences. We do not want to
get in trouble and most of all, we certainly do not want to look bad in
front of our colleagues, supervisors, and bosses. Yet, making the decision
to not own up to things can lead to consequences that can hurt you, your
interpersonal work relationships, and career.

Excuses lead us to take a 'victimized' position in the workplace. Things
seem to happen to you rather than you contributing to them.
Self-victimization often encourages defensiveness and sometimes, a sense of
helplessness. Continuing such an ineffective behaviour can attract other
people who victimize themselves or those who feeds on the victimization of
others. That is why employees with negative behaviours seem to often
gravitate toward each other since they become used to putting themselves in
that position and feeding that energy.

However, when you begin to take ownership of the things you think, say, and
do, people will trust your ability to take on responsibility at work. This
leads to real success. The more you embody responsibility, the more likely
you will take on new challenges, and personal and professional growth.
Furthermore, you will have more chances of attracting more positive support
and be placed in leadership and management positions in the workplace.

So stop making excuses and start embracing responsibility. It is easier said
than done, but the growth that comes along with doing so is well worth it.

The Many Benefits of Temporary Employment

Published February 01, 2010 by: Chris Pollard

There are many ways to start the journey toward a great career, but
temporary employment is a great way to go for many reasons. Temporary jobs
have many great benefits, and many advantages over traditional employment
opportunities. Whether you are just starting your working life, looking for
some extra spending cash or seeking a way to supplement your retirement
income, a temporary job can be a wonderful way to share your skills and gain
new experiences.

One of the most important benefits of temporary employment is especially
important to young workers with little or no experience. One of the great
paradoxes of the employment world is that many companies are reluctant to
hire workers without experience. Of course if those companies refuse to hire
inexperienced workers those workers cannot get the experience they need.
This type of Catch 22 can quickly discourage even the most confident and
capable job seeker. Temporary employment provides a way for those new
workers to get the experience they need to move forward in their careers and
their lives.

Temporary jobs also provide a great way for workers to gain a wealth of
experience in many different fields and in many different industries. It can
be difficult to get experience in many different fields via the traditional
employment route, but with temporary jobs workers can quickly and easily try
out several different companies and several different industries. This type
of varied experience allows workers to see where they fit in the grand
scheme of things without the need to job hop or change careers.

The experience gained can also be quite valuable when it comes time to seek
permanent employment. Employers who are looking for specific skills can find
what they need, and those workers can find the best fit. Many employers also
look to their pool of temporary staff members when the time comes to fill
permanent job openings. By being in the right place at the right time
dedicated temporary workers can become highly valued members of the
company's staff.

Temporary employment also provides a great deal of flexibility, certainly
much more than is typical in the world of traditional employment. Many
parents with young children especially love the flexibility of temporary
employment. With a temporary job those young moms and dads can work while
the kids are in school and take the summers off to enjoy quality family time
together. Few traditional jobs offer this type of flexibility, but temporary
employment certainly does.

Those reentering the workforce after raising a family may also find that
temporary employment is a perfect fit. It can be difficult to get back into
the swing of the corporate world after years or even decades away, but
taking a temporary job is a great way to get started.

Effective Tips on How to Gain Employment

Published February 01, 2010 by: Joseph Neel

Getting a Job

Everyone is talking about how bad the economy is. This can be discouraging
to hear when you are one of the many unemployed Americans that are looking
for a job, however we still live in a country that is full of opportunities
and second chances. With determination and some "thinking outside of the
box," you will have a much better chance at landing a job. Here are some
things that you can do to project your skills and availability to more
employers.

1. Look in the "help wanted" ads in the newspapers. You may not find the
perfect job in there, but you may find a job that you could work at for a
while.

2. Go to an employment rehabilitation office or apply with a temp service.
Both of these places keep an eye out for businesses that are hiring.

3. Word of mouth. Ask your friends, family members, neighbors, or people in
your community if they know of anyone that is hiring.

4. Search online for sites that help people find employment. There are
plenty of sites that can narrow the search down to the specific area that
you live in.

5. Keep going back to the places that you have already applied at. If it's a
place that you really would like to work at, you may even want to go back
every week or to and check on your application or fill out another one.

Try to come up with a list of things that you can do, and exhaust all of
your resources. Keep looking and applying and eventually you should be able
to find a job. If you do get an interview, remember to dress for success and
take the opportunity to "brag about yourself." Employers are wanting to hear
of the things you can do or have done in the past and this may be the only
chance you have to tell them, so be prepared. Bring a pen and a list of your
references with their addresses and phone numbers. You may even want to
print up a resume, depending on the job you are trying to get. Good luck
with your search and keep a positive attitude. You may eventually just
happen to end up at the right place at the right time!

LinkedIn expert tip – find people without paying $25
Posted: 02 Feb 2010 12:20 PM PST
Summary:

Sometimes, you search for someone in LinkedIn, but it says "out of network" because they aren't a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level connection, and LinkedIn won't give you the person's name.   You assume you have to pay LinkedIn $25 in order to see their name.  Not true, because you know me.

Details:
Here's my real life example
I was talking to a potential client (for social media consulting) at Connecticut Plastics, and she mentioned to me that the owner would be calling me.  I didn't hear his name clearly, and it would be awkward if I didn't know him by name when he called.
I did an advanced search on LinkedIn for

Connecticut Plastics ownerand it showed that he had a LinkedIn profile, but he was "out of network", so LinkedIn wouldn't give his name.
Cough up 25 bucks?  Not yet.
Look in Google using a fancy trick
Realize that Google has most LinkedIn profiles, so the trick is to somehow find them on Google for free.  If you pick some unique string from the info that LinkedIn does show you, and use a special feature of Google called the "site:" feature, (which allows you to just search one site on the Internet), you may find the name and full profile through Google.
I saw the string

Engineer at Alinabalin his profile and figured that very few other people would have that string in their profile.  Therefore, I put it into Google, along with the word owner, using the following magic search string

Engineer at Alinabal owner site:www.linkedin.comand found the profile in the Google results.  I clicked on the link, and LinkedIn showed me the LinkedIn profile page, with name and all.
See a 2 minute sample video
If you want to see a 2 minute video that shows exactly how to do it, go to my web site at

http://www.patrickomalley.com/linkedin-find-out-of-network-profiles-free.htmlThis technique doesn't work in every case, but it works in a lot of cases.  If it works for you, please send me $25 each time.
Pretty cool, huh?   Pass it on…
Shameless self-promotion
