FINAL REMINDER:  COMBINED DINNER MTG - TUES 2/9 - ROD COLON - ETP NT

Posted by: "john sampson" jcsspike@yahoo.com   jcsspike

Sun Feb 7, 2010 9:04 am (PST)

COMBINED DINNER MEETING
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The ETP Network

On Tuesday evening, February 9th, there will be a combined dinner meeting for current members, alumni, and guests of Association of Women in Computing (AWC),  IT-Networking, MIS Network Associates (MNA), Monmouth Networking, The Breakfast Club NJ (TBCNJ), ETP Network, and Careers in Transition (CIT) at the Holiday Inn, Totowa, NJ.

The dinner meeting will include a presentation by Rod Colón on his ETP Network.
Networking is having resources at your disposal—people that you can call on to connect you to companies, individuals or information that you need to turn a "cold call" into a "warm call."  How do you develop such resources whether in transition or not?  On the 9th, Rod Colón, who has a real passion for networking, will tell you how.
ETP Network Founder and CEO Rod Colón has a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in today's global economy.  Rod shares his 24 years of experience as a corporate HR management insider, outside agency recruiter, professional networker, and career coach through a unique, common sense approach to networking and career management. His in-depth knowledge of international staffing, recruiting, and networking gives Rod a unique ability to coach and consult today's professionals regarding the building and maintenance of their personal networks.
Rod uses his passion, energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to support others. He coaches professionals in the art of leveraging relationships that maximizes personal networking opportunities. Rod has also taken this hand-on approach to corporations that recognize that an organization's bottom line success requires professionals to leverage internal and external networks.  Mastering the skills and techniques to effectively utilize these networks is critical and essential to the success of both the professional and their organization.
One of Rod's passions is teaching at Georgian Court University.  He believes GCU is on the cutting edge educating woman on career management and networking. His 3-credit course has already had a tremendous impact on many of his former students in their academic and professional goals, and the way they each view their role as active managers of their careers.
Rod has been featured in Princeton Review, and has received numerous awards and recognition.  Rod is a graduate Georgian Court University and is a board member of the Georgian Court Alumni Association.

The schedule for the dinner meeting on February 9th will be:

-         6:00 pm – Registration, cash bar, and "speed dating"
-         6:45 to 7:15 Individual introductions with RSVP list reference – see below
-         7:00 pm - Dinner
-         8:00 pm – Rod Colón's presentation with appropriate Q & A

Following our usual meeting format, after you have registered and added your resume, etc. to the handout piles, everyone will participate in a series of informal networking groups i.e. "speed dating", before we sit down for dinner and the general introductions.  Briefly, these informal groups last for approximately 5 minutes.  At the end of the 5 minutes, the groups disperse, and new ones are formed with different participants.  Suggested dialogues for the groupings will be provided at the registration desk.

There will be an opportunity to circulate up to 50 copies of your resume, personal bio, leads, or other appropriate material in a handout from the dinner.

The cost will be $45 for everyone if forwarded by mail or other to John Sampson by COB on February 8th at 2 Blackfoot Cir, Wayne NJ 07470.  Checks should be made out to John. He can be reached at 973-248-3251. John's email is jcsspike@yahoo.com. Reservations can also be made through Lizanne Fiorentino at adminedg@optonline.net.

An RSVP list of attendees will be created and used to facilitate your networking activity. Current or last work affiliation, email address, and membership organization should be included in your RSVP. If you are in transition, please include the names of three target companies and the kind of position(s) you are seeking. If you are currently employed, you should provide the name of your last three employers. The preliminary RSVP will be distributed to the recipients of the initial mailing of this announcement and to all those on the list the week end before the dinner meeting for editing and informational purposes.  A "final" numbered RSVP list will be available at the registration desk on the 9th and can be used as part of your general introduction …"I'm # x on the RSVP list".

Since there will be walk-ins on the 9th,  the final RSVP list will be emailed to the attendees as quickly as possible after the 13th. A #ed RSVP  list will also appear on your name badge which will be available at the registration desk on the 26th.

We will accept a LIMITED number of walk-ins on February 9th.  Their cost will be $60 without exception as well as for RSVP's whose checks have not been received by COB on the Feb 8th. There will be NO refunds and no shows WILL be billed.

Again, attendees should bring 50 copies of their bio/resume, leads or materials they wish to be included in the handout for the evening of February 9th.

If you would like to help out at the meeting on the 9th, volunteer to be a "Meeting Marshall".  Call John Sampson at 973-248-3251 for details. We can use your help!!!

Directions to the Holiday Inn at One Rt. 46 Westbound in Totowa Park can be found at www.holiday-inn.com/totowanj    Traffic congestion at rush hour is substantial on Rt 46, so you should allow an extra half hour  to get to the Holiday Inn on the 9th.

Please join us for an evening of improving your attempts to build your personal network, great networking opportunities, and/or a chance to just catch up. Everyone should remember that personal networks are important whether in or out of transition.

4 Questions About Twitter Job
Seeking<http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Careerealism/~3/0wOt4WaG3sY/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email>

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 09:15 PM PST

*By CAREEREALISM-Approved
Expert<http://www.careerealism.com/careerealism-approved-expert-program/>,
Joshua Waldman <http://www.careerealism.com/joshua-waldman>*

A few weeks ago I interviewed a designer named Hal Thomas who got a job
using Twitter. To see the replay, you can visit it
here<http://www.guide2socialmedia.net>
.

I had MANY questions about the use of Twitter in the job search we simply
didnt have time to answer. So Im going to answer them here.

*If youre just getting started on Twitter, whats the best way to find
people that will target the people youre looking for to build your
relationships?*

There are essentially *two *ways to find people; either through their *profile
*or through their *tweets*.

You can search for different *key-terms* that may appear on someones
profile by using a tool called Twellow <http://www.twellow.com>. For
example, you may be looking for a marketing director for Hasboro. So you can
search for Hasboro and find anyone who uses it in their profile. Then you
can filter by job title, director, executive, etc. This is a great strategy
for adding key contacts to your Twitter list.

Sometimes, people *tweet about topics* that might not appear on their
profile. For example, someone might work at Hasboro, but not declare this
fact in their bio. However, it is likely theyll tweet about their job every
once in a while. In this case, you would use a tool called Twitter
Search<http://www.search.twitter.com>.
Ive given a brief video tutorial on how to use this tool on Youtube. You
can watch it here <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvhQ64uplp4>.

*Are you turned off by people who Tweet every 10 minutes about mundane
stuff, like what they had for breakfast? *

Twitter can get mundane, but if that breakfast you had was AMAZING, why not
share the experience. The whole point of Twitter is to get personal and form
relationships. Be learning about what you experience in your life, your
values are revealed and people feel like they get to know you.

One of the comments Sloan Kelly made, she was the one who hired Hal via
Twitter, was she felt she already knew him before he even walked in the
door.

.*

*So, what are your suggestions for what you should post on Twitter?*

When you are first getting started, its easiest to retweet what other
people have to say. Once you get a sense of what others are saying, it will
become easy to find material of your own. I suggest you start off with
these:

1. A *quote *you heard or read from someone famous recently.
2. An open ended *question *about a topic youve been thinking about.
3. An *experience *you had that was noteworthy or somehow related to your
future job.
4. Something that made you *happy*.
5. Something that made you *sad*.

*If you want a perspective employer to see you on Twitter, do you tag their
site in your tweets?*

Many companies monitor their brand using Twitter. They want to know what
people are saying about their products or services. Even authors are
monitoring Twitter for reviews which they can quote from. Often times, when
you mention a company by name, youll get a response.

I recently purchased by multi-vitamin on an online herb store. I tweeted
about my shopping experience and what a great price I got. That store wrote
me back personally to thank me for my business.

Job seekers can take advantage of this back-door approach. Just remember
you dont really know who is on the other side of that tweet.

If you would like to learn more about bringing social media into your job
search, please join Neal Schaffer, author of Windmill Networking, and
myself for a free webinar on Feb 16, 2010. You can learn more about this
opportunity here <http://www.endyourunemployment.com>.

The Evil Co-Worker<http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Careerealism/~3/ItA85CNy6yg/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email>

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 09:00 PM PST

*JT & Dale Talk Jobs is the largest nationally syndicated career advice
column in the country and can be found at
JTandDale.com<http://www.jtanddale.com>
.*

*Dear J.T. & Dale: *I have a co-worker who is always a total sweetheart when
other people are present. However, when we are alone, she yells at me and
calls me incompetent. I mentioned this to another co-worker, and he told me
I was nuts, that everyone loves her. We do the same job, and Im guessing
she is threatened by me. Im not sure I can hack much more of this evilness.
 Francesca

*Dale:* Hmmmmno one else has seen this behavior, and your explanation for
your co-workers obnoxiousness is that she is threatened by you. This
worries me. I fear it could be the same defense mechanism that lets some
people believe they are too smart or too honest. These insidious
rationalizations keep people from discovering the real problem.

*J.T.:* Well, Im not sure we need to generalize about rationalizing, but I
do agree that the first job is to make certain that there is bullying going
on. If, Francesca, you truly are the only person who feels this way about
the co-worker, it could be that you are super-sensitive and taking some
comments the wrong way. I have, on rare occasions, seen this happen. I would
hate for you to call her out on bullying, only to find out that it really
isnt.

*Dale: *The best test comes when you separate the work from the personality.
Get specific information on a couple of issues your co-worker has gotten
heated about, then write them up as case studies and give them to people
whose opinion youd respect. See if youre being casual with your own
expectations. Its possible that your co-worker simply is getting passionate
in defense of high team standards.

*J.T.:* Passionate? I remember that after tennis pro Serena Williams went
into her famous expletive-filled tirade, threatening to shove a tennis ball
down the throat of a line judge, her explanation was that she was
passionate. That didnt make it acceptable.

*Dale:* OK, point taken. But Im trying to separate work-related
obnoxiousness from a personal attack.

*J.T.:* Either way, we allow people to treat us the way they do. So,
Francesca, the next time the co-worker says something inappropriate, point
it out and ask her not to do it again. If she ignores your request, buy a
tape recorder. The next time you two are alone, hit Record. Tell her you are
tired of the way she treats you and that youre going to record the
conversations. This will get her to stop. If it doesnt, then youll have
something to play for your boss.

*Dale:* Game, set, match.
