Looking for a SQL Server Database Administrator - Lead  for a 6 month + position in the Princeton NJ area. 

 

Summary

The candidate filling this Lead SQL Database Administrator position will develop, deploy and support development, OAT, Stage and Production databases.

This includes database design, application development support, and database production support. 

The candidate will also schedule, set up and deploy new infrastructure database computers.

  

Responsibilities

  • Performs all SQL Server Database Administration related activities for major projects independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong capability and ability to resolve highly technical and complex database and infrastructure related issues on their own before they impact production and business. 
  • Provides technical expertise to the development of solutions for such items as DBMS tools and utilities usage, database administration, backup and recovery, database performance tuning and monitoring. 
  • Performs database migrations, upgrades and structure migrations. 
  • Ability to influence development organizations to comply with database best practices and corporate database standards and practices. 
  • Runs transaction access path analysis sessions with application developers, analyzing specifications and code to ensure that data access and database designs are as efficient as possible.  Make recommendations for improvements in these areas, if necessary.
  • Fully utilizes CASE tools to develop, or modify, physical database designs from logical designs, using the logical design, discussion with the Data Analyst, application development reviews, and documented results from transaction access path analysis sessions as input.
  • Assures quality of database analysis and design across projects, thus enabling company-wide data reusability.
  • Trouble-shoots database and/or software problems as they apply to design, implementation, or installation activities.
  • Schedules and coordinates database maintenance activities including such items as database reorganizations and restructures.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in database stress tests, analyzes results, and makes recommendations for design or coding changes based upon those results.
  • Participates in on-call, overnight off-hour production problem resolution activities.
  • Develops and maintains DBMS related standards and procedures, knows where they are located, and makes full use of them.  Follows corporate software development processes. 
  • Researches, evaluates, and tests new software and DBMS related tools and facilities as they pertain to the existing DBMS environment, database designs, procedures, and applications.
  • Monitors current DBMS performance and develops procedures, where necessary, to improve the DBMS environment as required.
  • Identifies and supports quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other assignments to comply with the IT corporate purpose and mission to add business value, increase revenue, decrease costs, improve productivity, and support the strategic initiative/directive. 
  • Complies with all corporate security and audit standards. Ensures security of company information by ensuring database is secure and monitors environment to identify improper access. 

 

Experience

  • 10 to 12 years of experience, at least last 5-7 years as Lead SQL Server DBA on all aspects of SQL Server Database Administration in a large/challenging database environment.
  • Experience setting up and configuring database encryption for SQL Server applications.
  • Hands on experience migrating SQL Server database applications from 2005 to 2008. 
  • Expert in SQL analysis and tuning SQL queries as well as database for optimizing performance.
  • Expertise in database backup and recovery and hands on experience setting up enterprise wide strategy for backups.
  • Experience setting up enterprise wide monitoring and alerting system and strategy for SQL Server databases.
  • Basic understanding of Connection pooling and .net architecture.
  • Experience working on SharePoint, BizTalk, SSRS applications is a Big Plus.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include

  • Willingness to work on-call DBA rotations in a 7x24 environment.
  • Ability to perform professional level technical documentation and presentation.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive and professional business relationships with both internal associates and external customers.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Proficient at time and priority management.

 

Education

The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree or Masters in Computer Science or 7 to 10 years of related experience in IT, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
