"Miracles start happening the day after Halloween."  Very inspiring

"Miracles start happening the day after Halloween."

By Eli Amdur

It's November and before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here,
followed by a month of holiday parties and then on to New Year's Day.

There are, as a result, a couple of serious errors in judgment
many people make. One is too much eating, drinking, partying and weight
gain. I can't help you with that. Not my job.

The other is convincing yourself this is a bad time of year for a
job search. Variations on that theme go like this: no one hires at this time
of year, budgets are done, companies are trying to meet annual goals so they
aren't concentrating on hiring, the economy sucks and there are no jobs
open, and so forth. Well, on this matter, I can help you. That is my job!

Bluntly, this thinking is wrong, wrong, wrong. The facts (if
that's what you want to call them) are wrong, the reasoning is wrong, and
the attitude is wrong.

I just got off the phone with my friend Janelle Razzino of Razzino
Associates, Inc, a successful 24-year old recruiting firm in Westwood, NJ.
We had a most spirited discussion about jobs, hiring, the job market, and so
on. [Note: it's not possible to have anything but a spirited conversation
with Janelle.] All I did was to ask her one question: "What are you seeing
out there?" Then I sat back and listened.

To put things in context and perspective, Janelle places
candidates in information technology, project management, accounting, and
finance positions. She does it, though, in all industries: financial
services, publishing, healthcare, and consulting services, to name a few.
She counts among her clients Fortune 100 companies, companies on the Dow,
and NASDAQ firms - real market movers. She also works with start-ups - new
market shapers. So when I ask her a question like that, I listen.

"I'm always busiest this time of year," she says. Always? Every
year? Twenty-four years? "Absolutely! Every year." There was no hesitation
in her voice.

Why?

"Now is the best time to make the hardest push you've ever made,"
she insists. Although some companies are done hiring for the year (many are
not yet done), they're now finalizing next year's budget, including how many
positions they'll add. So what does next year's budget look like? According
to the Q4 2010 Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, 15 percent of employers
anticipate a hiring increase next year, 11 percent see a drop, 71 percent
see no change, and three percent are undecided.

Now the question: are you a pessimist or an optimist? The
pessimist says only 15 percent of employers will increase hiring; the
optimist sees that 86 percent are either holding the line or adding, and
says, "Good deal! I'm putting on the push." Like Winston Churchill said,
"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees
opportunity in every difficulty."

Add to that the good news that the economy added over 150,000 jobs
last month, continuing the upward trend, and that's every reason to push.
And another thing: even when the economy lost 2.25 million jobs in Q1 2009,
there were still over four million hires made each month. That number is now
about 4.3 million.

Also, says Janelle, "Nobody's traveling this time of year [well,
almost nobody]. They're all here. Take advantage of that. Ask for the
interview, whether the hiring is immediate or in January." If more people
can see you, more people will see you.

Think about it. Getting an informational interview in the last six
weeks of the year is just plain smart. The meeting will be relatively
pressure-free with no job on the table (at least for now), and if you make a
good impression, and you and they seem to be a good fit, how do you like
your chances when the hiring opens up in seven weeks? Whom do you think
they'll call? And who will be one step ahead of all the other candidates?

This is also the best time of year "to continue and intensify your
networking," adds Janelle. "People are here and they're in the holiday
spirit." That's one of the constant truths in the world of the job hunt, and
it never changes.

For years now, I've been repeating one of my mantras: The American
workplace will never again accommodate the passive job seeker. That's the
person who, among other things, decides ahead of time that there's no hiring
going on for the rest of the year.

The opposite of passive in the job search arena, by the way, is
not active; it's proactive. A lot of people make themselves very busy -
"active" - doing a whole lot of nothing. It's called the activity trap, and
often it's a smokescreen that hides indecision.

Proactive also means thinking positively and that means
understanding that any time is the right time to be looking for a job, no
matter how bad the news is. Certainly, now that the workplace is loosening
up, this is even more relevant. Remember the more than four million hires
being made each month, including this time of year, the two months when so
many make the mistake of thinking there's no hiring going on.

A great way to keep that idea front-of-mind is to remember one
more thing Janelle said. "Miracles start happening the day after Halloween."

But only if you are prepared. Only if you put yourself into
position. You gotta' believe.

[image: Top Ten Holiday Job Search Tips] *Dear Peter,*

With Thanksgiving days away, and winter holidays just around the corner,
it's easy to fall into a "turkey coma" and forget all about your plans for
the job search. Don't let it happen to you!

We've compiled our top ten tips for holiday job hunting to help you along
the way. Of course, the team at
JobBound.com<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=slb57qbab&et=1103930113918&s=19009&e=001AMZOfAwK3d5Oa2joDikBSQo5UWGTwL31SlfFG16lXhAaGFsRlCd3YLqjT_oI0nxqn7MZhEEfEdca-e01CHRNXUQzOymvYefOA4LCrHbjTUgBTXdiUyH5nQ==>is
here to help if you need advice or assistance at any point.

[image: 10.] Get LinkedIn
Use the downtime throughout the holidays to create and perfect your
presence on LinkedIn.

[image: 9.] Go Shopping on Black Friday
Business attire is expensive, but a must have. Take advantage of
the sales on Black Friday and catch a deal on a sharp
interview outfit.
[image: 8.] Schmooze with your family.
You may think your inlaws are crazy, but they do have jobs AND connections.

[image: 7.] Put your business card in holiday cards.
Hit up recruiting directors with whom you interviewed and also include your
well-connected friends.

[image: 6.] Set one job search goal every day.
And no eggnog until you complete it!

[image: 5.] Get a temporary job.
...Especially if you need experience or funds. Who knows, you might be the
lucky temp who gets hired full-time.

[image: 4.] Attend the "ugly sweater" holiday party.
Get out there to meet new people and expand your network. Who said the job
search couldn't be fun?

[image: 3.] Make some calls to Recruiting Directors.
Sure, you've memorized their voicemail, but during the holidays, you have a
better chance of catching recruiting directors at their desk.

[image: 2.] Fine tune your resume.
You know it, and I know it. Your resume could use a little help. Finally,
you have a little down time to give it the attention it deserves.

[image: 1.] Volunteer and help out your community.
You gain experience, you meet people, you feel good, and you momentarily
forget that you don't have a job yet.
