 Summer Reading for All Ages
SUMMER READING isn't just for kids! The Library's summer reading program has been expanded to include adults as well as teens and children, and is available both online and in the Library. This year's theme is water, with a boatload of summer events, programs, prizes, and fun planned for all ages. Start off the fun by registering online (click here) for an age-appropriate program: kids will register for Make a Splash!, teens will Make Waves, and adults will Dive In. After registering online, kids will record their books read to be eligible to win prizes throughout the summer, including a paperback book, a Carvel ice cream cone, an all-day ride pass to Quassy Amusement Park, and more. The first 250 children to register for summer reading will receive a ticket to hear Annie and the Natural Wonder Band at Lake Mohegan on June 17 at 6:30 pm!

Teens will report their books (or magazines or manga) read by posting a review on the reading game page or on LibraryLady Nicole's Facebook wall, with every 200 pages read earning a raffle ticket for weekly drawings and an entry into the Grand Prize raffle - for a surfboard! Reading a teen-level Nutmeg book from any year will earn double - 2 raffle tickets for every 200 pages read and reported. Weekly prizes for teens will include autographed books and $50. gift certificates from Starbucks, Borders, iTunes, and more.  Teens will wrap up the summer with a Finale Party on Thursday, August 5 at 2:30 pm, complete with the grand prize drawing.  Teens must be at the party to win a prize.

For adults looking for suggestions for their next great summer read, the Library will feature a lobby book display that highlights a different genre each week. The first week of June will feature debut fiction, highlighting some of the top new authors and their works. The summer of 2009 had a runaway bestseller by a debut novelist, The Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick, and 2010 has some terrific new titles as well, including The Postmistress by Sarah Blake, Keeping the Feast by Paula Butterini, and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson.  Adults can win prizes too - register for the reading program online, and then drop your name in one of the beach buckets located throughout the Main and Fairfield Woods Branch Library (one entry per visit) to be entered into a weekly drawing. You must be registered for the adult summer reading program to be eligible to win a weekly prize!

Book Club Selections at the Library
DO YOU BELONG TO A BOOK CLUB?The Main Library has a special collection of popular and classic fiction and non-fiction titles for book clubs, offering multiple copies of each title with accompanying study guides to provide author biographies and discussion topics. Over 150 titles are available, including book club favorites such as Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, Loving Frank by Nancy Horan, and classics such as A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and Main Street by Lewis Sinclair.

We've devoted an entire room at the Main Library to housing this ever-growing collection - stop by the Quiet Reading Room on the first floor to browse (see photo, right). View the complete list of Book Club titles on our website, and then check our online catalog or call the Reference Desk (203-256-3160) for availability. The hardest part will be having the group decide which title to read next!

June is National Audio Book Month   HAVE YOU HEARD ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?  June is National Audio Book Month, a great time to take a look at (and listen to) some of the Library's newest additions to the popular audio collection, which includes books on CD, mp3 CD, and Playaway formats. What's a Playaway?  It's an audio book and player all-in-one, smaller than a deck of cards, and very lightweight (see photo, right). It comes pre-loaded with one audio book, so all you need to do is plug your ear phones or ear buds into the universal jack, press play, and enjoy. Our newest Playaways now have HD sound, offering a higher quality sound experience than the original Playaways. Try one today!

AudioFile magazine has announced their editor's picks of the most intriguing upcoming audio book releases for June and July, including The Passage by Justin Cronin, described as a 'gruesome, post-apocalyptic horror story that has military experiments gone awry, bloodthirsty vampires, and people scrambling to preserve the human race." In Sizzling Sixteen, Janet Evanovich continues her beloved fiction series with this 16th installment featuring bounty hunter/detective, Stephanie Plumb, and Spies of the Balkans by Alan Furst is a historical mystery set against the backdrop of World War II-era Greece.  These hot titles are all currently being acquired by the Library, just in time to accompany you on your summer travels, a trip to the beach, or the commute to work.

Other top new audio books we've recently ordered include: Daniel Silva's The Rembrandt Affair, centering around the murder of an art restorer and a newly discovered Rembrandt; Jennifer Weiner's Fly Away Home, a novel of three very different women that seek refuge in an old beach house and the friendship that develops among them; and James Lee Burke's The Glass Rainbow, with Detective Dave Robicheaux working to solve a series of gruesome murders in the latest in this beloved series.

Just last week, the Audio Publishers Association (APA) announced the winners of the Audies, the only awards competition devoted entirely to honoring the year's best spoken word entertainment. The 2010 award winner for the best Fiction audio book is The Help by Kathryn Stockett, a debut novel set in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, where black women were trusted to raise white children but not trusted to polish the silver. The award for the best Literary Fiction audio book went to Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, a mix of fact and fiction set in 16th-century Europe that captures the essence of the important figures of that time: Henry VIII; his wife, Katherine of Aragon; the bewitching Boleyn sisters; and the difficult Thomas More.

To view Library's entire collection of audio books, check our online catalog.  You can search by title, followed by the phrase "sound recording" to view only audio books. Call the Reference Desk at 203-256-3160 for more information

The Staff Speaks: Recommended Summer Reads
THE STAFF OF THE FAIRFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY often faces the same problem as the public we serve: too many books, and too little time! In an effort to help our patrons narrow the field a bit, we've compiled a partial list of some recently read favorites that we've thoroughly enjoyed and recommend for summer - or anytime - reading.

Branch Reference Librarian Mary Coe recommends The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry. She raves, "Anyone who enjoyed The Lace Reader will love this because it has the same feel.  The story is set in historic Salem, Massachusetts, and it has a bit of a mystical quality to it - fairy tales and witchcraft." Although she hasn't finished reading it yet, Mary also recommends The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. "This book was highly anticipated, and is on several 'Summer Read' lists, including Entertainment Weekly's. It's a grand love story set against the backdrop of Budapest and Paris, an epic tale of three brothers whose lives are ravaged by war, and the chronicle of one family's struggle against the forces that threaten to annihilate it."

Susan Zuckerman, Reference Librarian at Main Library, enjoyed the novel Tinkers by Paul Harding.  She states, "Passed over by all but one publisher - Bellevue Literary Press - this novel was the winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read- the language approaches poetry."  Susan also enjoyed Eye of the Red Tsar by Sam Eastland, which she describes as a good blend of historical fiction and mystery, with a plot that may lend itself to a future series. The book re-imagines the death of the Romanovs and features Investigator Pekkala, who is hired by the communists to find a Romanov who may have survived, as well as to possibly discover the Romanovs' treasures.

A good summer read should be light and fluffy, according to Valerie Fredericks, Head of Reference at Main Library. She recommends The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine, a recent bestseller "with characters that you'll love to hate", including socialite Betty Weissmann and her two grown daughters, all reeling from their recent divorce-forced move from upscale Manhattan to a run-down beach cottage in suburban Westport. Valerie also enjoys anything by author Tom Dorsey, and any of the#1 Ladies' Detective Agency series novels by Alexander McCall Smith.

Reference staffer Cliff Smith is a voracious reader of non-fiction, and his latest recommendation is Three Chords for Beauty's Sake: the life of Artie Shaw by Tom Nolan. Cliff describes this biography as "a fascinating portrait of a great musician, where Artie's personal and professional life is revealed in all its brilliance and excitement." As a former history teacher, Cliff also recommends Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent, "an engrossing history of America's most puzzling era, the years 1920-1933, when the U.S. Constitution was amended to restrict one of America's favorite pastimes, drinking alcoholic beverages."

For more summer reading recommendations, stop by the Main Library or Branch Library to see our weekly displays of great books by genre, including debut fiction, memoir and biography, Be Good to Yourself (health and wellness), sports, and more.  Our Reference staff is always ready to recommend a great read, as well.  Call the Main Library at 203-256-3160 or the Branch Library at 203-255-7308 for more information.

  Jobs 2010: Back to Work
DOES THE THOUGHT OF GIVING A PRESENTATION make your palms sweat and your heart beat faster? If it does, be assured that you are not alone, and that those anxieties can be overcome with preparation and guidance from an expert. Join us at the Main Library on Thursday, June 3 for The Interview: Your Most Important Presentation.

  Art Gallery: The Human Condition
THE BRUCE S. KERSHNER Gallery in the Main Library will be showing The Human Condition, the woodcuts of Donald Axleroad from May 23 through July 11.   In conjunction with his exhibition, Axleroad is hosting a free lecture and discussion, "An Overview of Alzheimer's Disease and Research" by Dr. Stephen Jones, gerontologist and director of Greenwich Hospital's Center for Healthy Aging, co-sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association, CT Chapter. The event is on Saturday, June 12 at 3 pm at the Main Library. Axleroad will also host a special event for children to learn about the Minotaur story and explore a labyrinth that will be set up in the Children's Library on Saturday, June 5 from 11 am - 1 pm.
Axleroad is known for his provocative, superbly crafted woodcuts inspired by Greek Mythology. In this exhibit, he explores the issues of Identity Theft, Role Reversal, the Fear of Fate, the Realities of Aging and the Loneliness of Alzheimer's victims. He sees a connection between the heroic and tragic figures of Greek mythology and the triumphs and tragedies of modern man, both challenged by the capriciousness of the gods or fate. His work depicts the challenge of coping with parents who become like children to their own offspring, and the dilemma of those with Alzheimers who are no longer sure who they are. Just as in ancient mythology, there is the fear of fate; bad things happen to good people, things over which they have no control.
Axleroad has received numerous awards from local, regional and national arts organizations including the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts Club of NYC, the Audubon Artists of America and the Allied Artists of America. His work has been included in a UN sponsored traveling exhibition of 100 American printmakers. A graduate of Pratt Institute, he studied with renowned printmakers Philip Guston, Richard Linder and Antonio Frasconi.

For more information about the Bruce S. Kershner Gallery at the Main Library, call 203-256-3160 or visit our website. The gallery is free and open to the public during Library hours.
