If you're an East Coast SharePoint user, there are a number of free, in-person events that can help you hone your expertise in specific areas. Microsoft partner DataLan will host a series of morning events in Manhattan, New Jersey, Boston and Philadelphia. Here's the list of event topics, dates and times. Also, there are SharePoint Saturday events coming up in Austin, Texas (Jan. 21) and in Philadelphia (Feb. 4). You can find out more at the SharePoint Saturday website.

Finally, if you're in the Boston area tonight, Jornata CEO and SPTechCon speaker Scott Jamison will be presenting to the user group there on findability.

So go, learn, network and schmooze. It's all good.

Exostar releases cloud-based collaboration service

By David Rubinstein

ForumPass 5, yesterday's updated release of Exostar's project collaboration service built on Microsoft SharePoint 2010, has strengthened security features and an improved user experience, the company said in an announcement.

ForumPass 5 runs in Exostar's Community Cloud and uses the company's Identity Hub to bring together identity management and multi-tenancy capabilities.

Among the enhanced security features in ForumPass 5 are stronger encryption, support to additional types of credentials for two-factor authentication, attributes-based claim support, and data protection designed with an eye toward digital rights management.

The user enhancements include integration with Microsoft Office and Outlook; the ability to customize UI design, forms and workflows; more powerful search; and social networking business tools.

"Customers want the latest functionality supported by Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and the stringent security standards for which Exostar is known. That's precisely what ForumPass 5 delivers: a highly secure, cloud-based, enterprise-class complete collaboration service offering," Vijay Takanti, Exostar's vice president of security and collaboration solutions, said in the announcement.

To enable SharePoint for use by your company's executive staff, boards of directors, and human resources departments, you and your fellow SharePoint administrators must go beyond common SharePoint security mechanisms such as role-based access control and security for the network session.

As you'll learn about in this short white paper, your company needs to make sure that privileged IT administrators cannot mistakenly or maliciously access sensitive content. However, new security controls must not hamper the end users' productivity.

How can you create security controls that lock IT professionals out of sensitive data while maintaining the end-user ease of use that SharePoint is famous for?

People often ask The Linker, "Link? Why do people call your favorite football team the New York Football Giants? Is that to differentiate them from any other New York Giants?" And the answer, dear friends, is yes. Back before Major League Baseball went west, young man, there was a National League baseball team playing in upper Manhattan called the New York Giants. That was the team of Bobby Thompson and "The Shot Heard 'Round the World," as well as a young Willie "The Say Hey Kid" Mays, Sal "The Barber" Maglie, Leo "The Lip" Durocher, and many other colorful characters. Alas, they have moved on, both geographically (now the S.F. Giants) and metaphysically (all but Mays have passed on to the great Polo Grounds in the sky, yet still exist in the baseball continuum). The New York Football Giants, on the other hand, live to play another week, as they get set to travel to Green Bay, Wis. and take on the top-seeded Packers in an NFC Divisional Playoff Game. Go Big Blue!!

With the release of Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint 2010 is now available in the cloud, and SharePoint Online is poised to go mainstream. Many are considering hybrid solutions with both on-premise and cloud implementations of SharePoint. Regardless of how you use SharePoint, you can have the freedom to manage and move data between on-premise servers and the cloud—whether it is a private cloud, multi-tenant environment, hybrid cloud, or some combination thereof. Attend this webinar to learn which scenarios work best in the cloud and what to consider when moving your data to or from this new platform.

A lesser-known Web Part connection option

By Chris Caravajal, SharePoint911

Web Part connections are a popular out-of-the-box feature that enable users to connect Web Parts in such a way that selecting data from one Web Part can automatically perform an action on the data in a connected Web Part.

To set one up via the browser, users can simply manipulate the Web Part properties options and connect Web Parts that are on the same Web page. By now, most users are familiar with this feature and incorporate it into their organization's SharePoint sites. What most users don't know is that this is not the only option that is available to them. It is the only option via the browser, but if a user opens a SharePoint 2010 Web page in SharePoint Designer 2010, another Web Part connection option is available to them, connecting to a Web Part that is on a different Web page. Once done, users can filter and update data based on the connection.
