5 Tips for Writing an Effective Résumé

A well-crafted resume can tip the job-search odds in your favor.

In today's fiercely competitive job market, it's harder than ever to stand
out from the crowd. One way CFOs can do so is to make their résumés stand
out. Just as corporate data must be corralled and organized, so a finance
chief's résumé should be shaped into a single, consistent story, experts
say.

In part, that's because the hiring process involves a large dose of
typecasting. "Recruiters are paid a premium to find somebody who fits into
the box they're trying to fill," says Howard Seidel, a career and executive
coach at Essex Partners, a Boston-based career-management firm. Executives
who resist simplifying their experience into a single story do so at their
peril, Seidel says, ending up with résumés that can look "muddled."

To create a clear, effective résumé, experts recommend the following five
tips:

Question of the Week: Help Me Make Sense of Working with Recruiters

by Kevin Kermes

This week's question isn't so much a particular one as it is a collection of
questions I've been getting around one central theme: recruiters. How do I
work with them? When should I work with them? Why aren't they calling me
back? Are they a waste of time?

In today's Q&A column I'm not only going to tackle many of these topics, but
I've created a video for you that will help you figure out when its most
beneficial for you to work with a recruiter and how to get the most out of
the relationship.

Mandatory Skills You Need to Compete in This Economy

By Dan Schawbel

Jun. 14 2011 - 12:28 pm

It used to be that if you had the right technical skills, you could count on
a job. Then, as companies received numerous resumes for fewer open
positions, they started looking at "soft skills" in addition to "hard
skills." After the economy tanked, and with the rise of social networking,
we are seeing a new type of skill emerge based on a professional's online
influence. If you want to compete in the new global economy, you will have
to constantly and persistently develop each of these skill sets.

Improving "Soft Skills" to Land the Job

Over the years of working with job seekers, I have realized something very
important. While every employer seeks a different mix of abilities and
experience from its employees, there is one common thing they all look for:
Soft skills. These are the skills that are the "intangibles" that you use
every day to accomplish tasks. Communication skills, leadership skills, and
teamwork are some common skills that employers screen for when interviewing
job applicants. To put it simply, improving your soft skills increases your
chances of being hired and keeping your job.
